Gary why are you here? To stop the destruction caused by alcohol abuse I assume. Dont see how attacking other members can help you achieve that aim.
Ethanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?

Guys can we not agree to disagree and put this to bed? We are now only achieving ill feeling and a divide amongst us. This is usually a place for great support and compassion, lets get it back on track. :l

I just want to say that I have been hanging around reading and lurking and posting for quite a while now and I can honestly say that any of the members who have posted in this 'issue' are kind, supportive, honest people, the advice and care they show for anyone coming on to this site is beyond anything they need to do. I cannot comprehend this nonsense. Just step back and think about what this is about.

Hello Stirly, that is a horrifying story, I didn't see the other post, something I am very ashamed of along these lines happened to me once which I told only one person, only now when I am stone cold sober do I look at my past with disgrace and shame.

You just didn't get the message....

For Gary: After reading posts directed at Diz (this kind of stuff has happened before on this site and when it does I always want to quit getting on.......not to say that alot of really great stuff doesn't happen here as well), I decided to start a thread in "What We Believe" for Catholics. However, at this point there are no Catholic takers so I think we will swith over to a "Christians only need apply". There will be ground rules, though, so it may feel alot safer for you. I don't know if you are Christian or not but you would be welcome there in that I think we will all try to avoid judgement and condemnation of others.

I am interested. Thanks for this New Creation.

Crucify the repenter that made his admission public? This is getting deep. I feel for the next one that opens up his sins. Judgement. Think about who ultimately is the Judge. Is it you or Him?

If there is not a child in my own back seat, there is a child in someone else's.

I'm mortified at the number of times I drove drunk and am on my knees grateful that I never killed anyone. I hope to never drive drunk again.

A girl I go to AA with killed her fiance. They were leaving a party together. She thought he was too drunk to drive, so she drove. She was convicted of manslaughter and did prison time. At least prison time ended. There will never be an end for her to the fact that she killed her fiance while driving drunk. I admire her for somehow finding a way to live on from that in relative peace. I could have easily killed someone a zillion times. And I honestly don't know how I would live through it.

I'm sorry that there was an apparent "forum eruption" over drunk driving. For any newcomers, I'm sure you've read multiple times by now that these forum eruptions happen from time to time. I think that's to be expected when there are so many people here, and at a variety of stages of recovery from denial to many years sober. All part of the territory I guess.

If you are like me and have taken many risks behind the wheel, I hope you make every possible effort to never do it again. If you are still drinking and need to stop, be willing to go to any length necessary to get the job done. If what you are doing isn't working, CHANGE THE PLAN. Do it before somebody dies.

Excellent post DG.. I am in total agreement to everything you wrote,
I was also foolish and drove drunk and had a car accident 3 years ago, whilst trying to "escape" my ex (though its no excuse) - I had an accident but was very VERY lucky no-one was hurt - i just had some whiplash.. i tried to kill myself 3 days after that accident by overdosing in a backpackers as I felt so stupid, guilty and depressed.. luckily I was found.. I am going to try everything to never ever drink and drive again.. and that means my going to rehab in a month's time (after all my court cases with my ex are over with)..

No texting and driving for me. Talking hands free only (to the degree I feel safe doing it depending on traffic) within the laws of my area. (cell phone laws in IL vary by city and county)

The fact that activities such as talking on a cell phone (or texting or eating french fries or changing the radio station) while driving can be dangerous does not excuse drinking and driving, IMO.

I'm curious, if you're comfortable answering, what is AA's stance on drinking and driving and how would they handle the situation of someone driving drunk but seeming not to take responsibility.
AA is all about taking responsibility for that which is in our control. Because I am powerless over alcohol (meaning I have no idea what will happen if I take the first drink), I AM responsible for using the tools of the program to NOT DRINK.

If I were to drink and drive and something tragic were to happen, I believe I would be encouraged to take responsibility by accepting legal consequences and doing my utmost to make any amends for harms done. I hope I never have to try to make an amend like that girl did who killed her fiance. But believe it or not, she has a good relationship with his family now and that has only been possible with a lot of well grounded humility and acceptance of responsibility on her part. There are many people in AA who have done tragic things while drinking. We learn to work through those things and live on. But that doesn't mean tragic consequences are viewed lightly. Everyone realizes that any one of us could have been the one to have such a tragic consequence happen. It's a program of tough love. At least that has been my experience with it.

Oh. And my sponsor would throttle me if I drank, period. I don't want to think what she would have to say if I drank and drove. I'd rather not find out. I don't think her walker would look very good around my neck. It's not my color.

Abstinence really is the answer for people like us. I'm so thankful that as long as I don't drink today, I don't have to worry about things like consequences of drinking and driving today.

You have to feel bad about your actions or nothing will change! guilt is necessary, but then we need to forgive ourselves, as we are only human.. and AL is a very powerful beast..
DG- i agree.. any distraction when driving can be fatal, but drinking and driving is especially bad as it totally alters the way you think.. and being behind the wheel of a moving heavy piece of metal that can go very fast is extremely dangerous.. esp. as AL gives you a false sense of confidence, changes perception and reaction times.. i think the idea that all cars come in built with a breathalyser, so the car cannot start unless you breath 0.00 is a good one..
