New here and would love some advice!!!
Hello. I have been reading many posts over the past few weeks and am finally getting up the nerve to write. I have been concerned about my drinking for a while now, but have recently started feeling the effects of alcohol, physically. I would say that I am a heavy drinker according to what I read is considered a "heavy drinker" for a female. Earlier this year in February, I started getting bad stomach pains/cramping. I was really concerned, so I went to the doctor and they did some tests (LFT has always been normal) and an ultrasound. They looked at all of my organs, etc. Everything was normal (I was surprised about the liver)! But about a few days ago, I noticed my legs cramping, shins aching, feet/hands tingling and feeling numb. I chalked it up to "that time of the month," but it hasn't gone away, and I started reading about Neuropathy. I am totally freaking out. I am 35, married and have a little child. I am very mad at myself for doing this to my body. My drink is wine. If I didn't drink wine, I would probably not be in this situation, because to be honest with you, I don't really like beer or hard alcohol. But wine I can have every night (and have had for many years now). I used to keep it to one or two glasses, but recently it has started with a few glasses of Chard and then a glass of red with dessert. Excuses, excuses! I have tried to stop for a week or two, and can never do it! I always have that craving, especially during my "witching hour" from around 5-8pm. Tonight I went to a party by myself (not knowing anyone except for the host of the party) and I had sparkling water! I am VERY proud of myself. I probably would have had a few drinks if I didn't still feel like crap from the pain/numbness! I think it is a sign to stop for good! Life is too short and I need to focus on my family and my health. Has anyone else had this problem with Neuropathy? I am very happy to have found this forum and I really appreciate the honesty and openness from everyone. Thanks for any feedback or support you have for me! Take good care!!Tags: None

Hi Stressd and welcome to the boards. Glad to meet you.
I used to get leg cramps if I drank Red Wine funny enough, but not usually with any other type of alcohol. That was a long time ago.
However a couple of months back I went on a brandy binge for about a week and in the end my feet had gone numb but if I tried to walk on them or touched them it hurt. If that makes sense. After I was out of withdrawals, all of the other symptoms had gone away (shaking, sweating etc) but my toes took a long time to improve. It really freaked me out too. I couldn't walk properly for about 2 weeks.
They are much better now - I stopped drinking and started taking Thiamine (B1) every day and they have improved. But I do still have a slight numbness in my big toes, although it is bearable. I'm not sure it will go away, so it will serve as a great reminder of what drink can do to our bodies.
Ace job on the sparkling water at the party - that's my tipple of choice now - along with Red Bull ;-)
You will find a lot of support here on the forum - I hope it can be of use to you. Take care,

Hi stressed & welcome!
I don't have any knowledge about your particular issue with neuropathy, but I just wanted to encourage you in your quest to stop drinking. I think a good starting place for you would be to read the MWO book. You can download it from the top of this page at the Health Store. Take the supplements, eat well, drink a LOT of water (look at your calcium/magnesium intake and ratio and add kelp if you think you need improved circulation) Develop a plan for yourself to stop drinking. Of particular help may be these threads https://www.mywayout.org/community/f1...box-27556.html and https://www.mywayout.org/community/f1...lan-41280.html
Best to you and let us know how we can help!sigpic

Welcome and we have the female, wine drinking thing in common. I have been in and out of denial for the past few years. I tell myself it's only a few glasses a day but it's EVERY day. When the gang here suggests to give up alcohol for one month before trying to moderate I find it impossible to last more than a few days. Right now I am on vacation and should be home within a week. When I get home I will become a Grandmother for the first time within a few days. I really want to go A/F (alcohol free) for a month when I get back.
You are wise to start working on yourself right away. We can do this together. One thing I have underestimated until recently is the physical part of the addiction. The body screams at me some nights to open a bottle of wine.
I hope to be able to post at the end of September that I have succeeded in being alcohol free for one month... want to join me?Tipplerette
I do this for my children, my grandchildren, my health, my peace of mind, and mostly for the opportunity to learn to live with my true, unfiltered, clear-headed, vulnerable self.

Hi!
Yes, the bottle of wine screams at me too!! For me, it has always been, "well, wine is okay because everyone drinks it with dinner..." or "people in Europe drink wine at lunch and dinner...so why can't I ?" It has been getting worse and worse. I can't just have one glass...I usually do not let myself finish the whole bottle, but what I will do is have some white, then go to a bit of red. That to me is not having the whole bottle!! It probably equates to the same amount, though!! Anyhow, I would love to go on this journey together. And by the way, congrats on being a Grandma!! So exciting!!! One problem with accessing this site is that my husband does not know I am on here and I have to avoid it when he is around. So I will do my best to post and be online. My best friend is pregnant, so I am going to try to be sober the 9months that she can't have a glass of wine. It is a vow I have made and I will try my best not to break it. Let's see if it works!!

Stress, you've done so well with recognizing your problem early. If you talk to your Hubby, could he be supportive?
Sometimes it takes a long time for phyical problems to show up. We hope what we hear is good, but AL does take it's toll.
I'm sorry for the physical problems your going through, but maybe it's an early wakeup call. Find a thread here you like, and check in as often as you can. There are lots of regular ones here. I'm usually on 'Journey', but I check in with 'Army' too. Find where you're comfortable, OK.
PM me if you want to. There are many here who will support you along the way. And, WELCOME!sigpic

Stressd,
people in Europe also smoke much more. I know heaps of French people and vast majority smokes and drinks like there is no tomorrow, therefore I am not really so sure about these "people in Europe drink wine at lunch and dinner" doing right decisions.
All the best,
NettyWe are your friends. You don't need to be alone again. So come along.

Congrats Stressed - nearly a week! That's cool. You WILL start feeling better slowly but surely as the toxins leave your system.
You may well have some residual health issues due to drinking most days - I had burned a hole in my stomach through drinking neat spirits for years. Don't be worried though as even that was made better with medication, which I am now off. Putting down the drink only serves to make your health vastly improve over the long-term.
You're doing a great job Stressd - keep it up. Great that you've made a commitment to your friend - I know that it helped me when I promised my parents I would do something about my drinking.

Stressed, I am with you. My one or two glasses of wine has recently turned in to a bottle a night. I am on day 7 AF and am feeling great! I like how you said "wine screams" at you. I call it a wrestling match of brain vs body. I have literally sat outside the story with the wrestling match going on, and frequently lose, and my body just walks in and gets a bottle. The first few days are always the hardest for me. I have major night sweats when I don't drink. On day 7, and will go until Aug. 28, that will be 24 day sober for me. When I return from my vacation, I am going to see how long I can go. I want to get a 30 day under my belt. I don't think I have ever gone that long.
Keep up the good work. You have a friend who is ready to pin down the wine once and for all.
