hoping to stay sober at tonights party.

    Hi all,
I am envisaging to stay sober at tonight party.let's see!
I have heard that you need to declare yourself as a AL free in a gathering, which would add more will power to stay sober! Have you got any experience about it.? how people will perceive if I break my commitment in future? .
Still people believe me That I am a social drinker though I feel myself alcoholic . What I wanted is,would make an announcement in a gathering that I will never drink alcohol in future? Does it work or leave bad impression among the society if failed! ! Please share!

    Hi Kota,
Good luck with tonight. I always tell people I don't drink any more, some people don't feel the need to give any reasons and others find it easier to say they are on a health kick or taking medication you can't drink with (then if you did slip up later it wouldn't look bad).

Whatever helps you and you feel comfortable doing, do it.

Hi Kota, You could say something like "No thankyou I dont feel like drinking tonight"...that way you are not telling them that you have given up completely and therefore if, you go out again and do drink, you wont have to worry about people saying....."oh I thought you said you werent drinking anymore"..... so no pressure

            Hi Kim and Sap,
Thank you for your valuable guidance.this would be the nice idea.
But one more strategy some people usually adapt is they swear not to drink anymore in front of many people sometime they organise a party to declare that commitment. Using this strategy they fear or shame to drink again cause of loosing credibility I would wonder if you have got such a information from the network, friends, reading, learning or simply from surrounding. If it could be an idea I may try later.your advices are welcome.
            Wish you all the best.

kota the person you have to tell that your not drinking is yourself, there are many an excuse one can use tonight if you really have to go,
              say your on medication
              not feeling to well
              your driving etc etc
goodluck with what ever you do.

                Hi Kota,

Personally all my real friends knew I had a drink problem without me having to tell them (it is more obvious than we think to others sometimes), so when I told them I was giving up (usually just causally in the course of going out) they were just accepting and probably quite pleased. Some were surprised of course, but still accepting.

When I slipped up, as I invariably did in the past, because they were real friends they would just let it go. If I did something stupid or couldn't remember what I had done, I would just apologise to them and move on from it back down the alcohol-free route.

It really is up to you what you feel most comfortable doing.

kota, you are probably already at the social event you were asking about. Just wanted to say that I hope all goes well for you.

                        Hi Kota,
Ok so you slipped up after the party. BUT you should congratulate yourself on making it through the whole party without a drink - that's really good, especially if doing that is totally new to you.

Don't beat yourself up - just see if there is anything you can learn from your experience. Why, after succeeding at the party, did you slip up afterwards? What did you feel at the time etc? We can always learn from what doesn't go so well. And don't forget to be proud of what does go well for you!

Whilst you managed to stay sober for the party, you did slip afterwards and that can also be a way some alcoholics drink. There were many times I managed to keep myself AF, only to sneak off when I felt I'd earned it and drink again. So I'm not sure it is ok.

Regards the event itself, you don't need to announce just simply know in yourself. People really won't notice much and if asked if you'd like a drink simple say "I'm not drinking", or "I don't drink". That's more than enough for most people. Just be careful someone doesn't inadvertently pour you a drink or forget, because they can just assume everyone is drinking. As long as you keep an eye out it's usually fine.

I remember I did that once.
I was at a 40th birthday party and drank lemonade all night, drove everyone home then started on a bottle of vodka at three in the morning....
I dunno who I was trying to fool.
