how alcohol damage our brain and how can we regain?

    My fellows,
I am really keen to know about the brains chemistry so advise me how can I learn it.you know I had a very challanging brain before I became dependent on alcohol for two decades.
Now I have depression as well as forgetful tendency.
I remember the the things I have to do anyway and can't remember whatever I purchased yesterday for kitchen goods for me and kids.I sometime use others stuff from fridge as we share the same fridge to put the stuffs.
Twenty years back I had a mind like almost tape recorder now like ass...disgusting!
    Look forward to hearing!

That's right alcohol does have a negative effects on the body if consumed in a higher amounts. I think that it would be a very good thing to start lowering on your amount and try to indulge yourself in some or the other work if you are alone try meeting and getting along with someone. Talking your heart out would seem an outlet to your sorrows.

The worst, other than maybe death is wet brain. After a person develops it, maybe they don't suffer mentally, but it is a horror for the family. And it can happen easily to someone who is a chronic, heavy drinker.

                  Rubywillow,

Glad you shared the info on wet brain, i.e., Wernicke-Korsakoffsyndrome. This does not happen overnight, rather, a gradual decline. Once you are diagnosed with this syndrome, it is irreversible. Here is some additional information on brain changes due to alcohol from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

ALCOHOL'S DAMAGING EFFECTS ON THE BRAIN

If you are having problems with depression, memory recall, etc. It is time to stop drinking now.

As a side note to alcohol's influence on the brain -

On my last day of detox (5th day) the place gave me a "mental evaluation" that included an IQ test. When they gave me the results I was horrified at the scores. My IQ was way down from the last time I took I took a test at a work seminar 5 years ago. Brought this up with my primary physician who didn't seem a bit surprised since he knows my history. Was told 6-8 weeks A/F before things would slowly begin to return to normal.

                        Scary !!

                          M3,
The link you gave me has a lot of information in changing brain chemistry due to different substance abuse. I have gone through and having some knowledge that I was looking for
it is though vast enough cause of some technical medical literatures used in article.
                          Thank you!
                          Rv434,
Very useful information that brain takes 6-8 weeks to regain its power back.Really true ,it may not be recovered if damaged badly .Isn't it? Have you got any information that the cells of brain have damaged partially and how can we know that?
                          Many thanks,
                          Kota:thanks:

Kota, we can get to a point where there is no recovery. It happens. Sometimes, with heavy drinkers, another trauma makes it impossible to overcome. The only answer is to stop; not to keep up our behavior and hope we've not reached the point of no return.
I KNOW I was affected. With the effects of getting older, it is compounded. IMHO, people reach a stage when they cannot drink in moderation again, because our brain chemistry has changed. Many experts believe this too. I've seen, firsthand, the effects of long term alcoholism, and it is too sad. It changes us physically and mentally, so why do we do it? The answer is not easy, and the struggle to stop is difficult, but we have to make a choice.
