I've only heard of it - Stirly mentioned Mr. Stirly's "name day" (they're from Greece) - bit I'm not sure what it is.

    Care to tell us more?
    I'll do whatever it takes

      Hey Tip.
My background is Polish. This is from wikipidia:

Traditionally, name day celebrations (Polish: imieniny) have enjoyed a celebratory emphasis greater than that of birthday celebrations in Poland. However, birthday celebrations are increasingly popular and important, particularly among the young. Imieniny involve the gathering and socializing of friends and family at the celebrant's home, as well as the giving of gifts and flowers at home and elsewhere, such as at the workplace. Local calendars often contain the names celebrated on a given day.

Hey Net - just dropped in for a quick peek at the posts and saw this. Happy, happy Name Day!! Name Days are still celebrated in a similar fashion in Greece even tho' the younger people celebrate their birthdays as well. Here, as you may know, the official religion is Greek Orthodox and you celebrate your Name Day on the Name Day of the saint you are named after. It is usually based on the birthday of that saint. For example, St. John's Name Day is the 7th of January. Yesterday was the Name Day for the Saints who's names mean love, faith, hope and wisdom. Today the names are Ariadne, Ariana, Evmenis, Kastor, Romylos, Romili and Romilai. Only the first two names are popular nowadays.
Something kind of interesting. JackieClaire and I are regular posters on the Army Thread. Her husband and mine share similar names. Funny thing is that Mr. JC's birthday is the same day as Mr. Stirly's Name Day. Quite a coincidence.
Anyway, hope you are having a lovely day and celebrating it in the fashion that is traditional to your family. I think it's a shame when modern practices push tradition aside. We should all be aware of and proud of our ancestors and the traditions they held so dearly.
Hey - even Photobucket has an appropriate photo. So here's wishing you a very

Funny, I couldn't find "St.Network" on any of my calendars.

But it sounds like a nice tradition, so happy name day!

Yep it's the same here in Spain..
normally connectd to religous names e.g. St peter = all the pedro's & so on..
friends give flowers or a small pressie and if it's the same day as their b'day it's a bigger birthday party..
