This is driving me to... think. Help!

I'm trying to remember the title of a novel I read at least 15 years ago - and it wasn't contemporary at that time. (I think I bought it in a second-hand store.) I had thought the author was Nevil Shute but I've just searched and this particular book isn't among the list of titles written by him.

Is it "The Shipyard" (Onetti), Coco? That's in South America, though (I think--read a lonnnnng time ago).

Wow I love a guy who knows :H:H I was wondering how long it would be before this thread got answered - I have to be honest I was expecting it to go to at least 10 pages and 50 book titles :H:H

              I think I've found it...

"The Slipway," by Graham Billing (1974). It's out of print but I've ordered a used copy from Amazon. com for the whopping price of $1.00! (LOVE Amazon for used books!)

What surprised me was how many novels about drunken failing shipyard owners were out there. Glad you found it! : )
