I'm trying to remember the title of a novel I read at least 15 years ago - and it wasn't contemporary at that time. (I think I bought it in a second-hand store.) I had thought the author was Nevil Shute but I've just searched and this particular book isn't among the list of titles written by him.

"The Slipway," by Graham Billing (1974). It's out of print but I've ordered a used copy from Amazon. com for the whopping price of $1.00! (LOVE Amazon for used books!)CocoComment
