What you tried was green and limp. Needs to be picked young, the woody stem snapped off and discarded. Lightly steam and serve with a knob of melting Irish butter, a pinch of sea salt and lots of cracked black pepper. Best eaten with the fingers. "A green vein":H!!! My dad forced me to eat asparagus when I was about six. I vomited on the table. They did not try to make me eat THAT veggie ever again. I still hate it to this day.
