It's a beautiful. cold autumn day and I am looking forward to getting out of work, making a healthy dinner for my family and then watching a movie with my kids. Instead of "treating myself" to a drink, I'm going to treat myself to cuddles with my kids, and maybe some popcorn or hot cocoa with homemade whipped cream.

DG - I have been staying at home - I seem to be able to not drink when I am in total control here (day 19 AF). I work from home, so I intermingle that with cooking and all the other stuff that goes along with being home.
I am not looking forward to when I finally allow myself to be out and about in social/drinking settings. That will be my challenge.

Wow - lots of great strategies mentioned here! And now I want mashed potatoes.
I decided I'm not drinking today. I see we already have a few people officially "in." Anyone else? How are you going to do it? Keeping busy works for me. And staying away from known triggers. I even did a little closet cleaning of sorts today (put away the last of the summer stuff).
I'll worry about tomorrow when it gets here. Today? No AL for this girl.

We (Mr B and his son and me) have an unfinished game of "Risk" left over from last night. I'm usually the complete loser at this game but today I am in with a chance!!! Currently I control North America and Europe, but Mr B has huge numbers of troops in Asia and his son has Africa and South America. At one point last night I thought we might have declared world peace, but it was not to be :H
There is no way I could win this game if I had a drink :H:H World peace is at stake :HNever give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn

I am not going to drink today.
I am going to get off here in about half hour, saddle up my dog, put some loud music through my headphones and stride off into the morning. Take a break in the park gazing at the magnificence of the place that I live in (blessed)....breathe in the crisp mountain/sea air and wonder at the perfection and stillness of the gum trees surrounding me. Then I will get stuck into some house-work, cook an indian curry with condiments for my son who turns 27 today...share that with the other sons for dinner today, where I sit at the table and quietly reflect on how this wasnt possible in days gone by when I was completley taken over mind body and spirit by alcohol.I am a part of the family of humanity. MB - at your game! I wonder if Greenie knows you have control of the US. She is Queen you know. :H
Your posts made me think about my gratitude list. I keep a written list in the back of my calendar / planner thingy that goes with me everywhere. I think I'm going to whip that out and have a read and add some things. There really is so much to be enjoyed in life. All the little things I missed when all I cared about was the next drink. (before I was even finished with the one I was working on!! :egad

I won't be drinking tonight either. I spent a few hours today in Barnes & Noble perusing some new books and came home with two, one of which I'm diving into tonight. It's called "Full Recovery: Creating a Personal Action Plan for Life Beyond Sobriety" by Brian McAlister, and I'm really enjoying it.

I am not going to drink today.
Hello everybody!
Hi, I have never posted before. I joined this group on behalf of my Girlfriend. She is a drinker that is out of control. I have been trying to gently get her to cut back consumption and she does for awhile but then goes back to it. She does not deny that she drinks too much but is in denial about the ill effects it has on her health and the damage it does to our relationship. I normally refuse to buy her any alcohol. Tonight she requested a bottle of wine and I got it for her. It was a 1.5 litre bottle. I gave it to her at 9:30 pm and I noticed at 11:30 pm she had drank 1 litre ie 2/3 of the bottle! She went to bed at that time. I have decided that I will tell her tomorrow that I will never buy liquor for her ever again. I now need help getting her to stop buying it herself and more importantly finding a strategy to get her to stop drinking entirely. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!

I am not going to drink today.
Hello everyone! First off, just wanted to mention that I have made a firm decision that I will not drink any AL today. I can do anything for just one day. And if one day seems too long, I can break it down and just go hour by hour until it's bed time. "Forever" seems overwhelming, but I can handle not drinking just for today.
OK.
:welcome: Ajaxdragon. I love the links that Sheri already provided. While there is nothing you can do to "make" someone else stop drinking, there are things you can do to stop enabling. Not buying the booze any more would be a good start I think.
I also like the suggestion of attending a couple of Alanon meetings to see if that night be a helpful resource for you. As with AA meetings (which I attend regularly) I understand that all Alanon groups are a little different depending on who attends. That's why I suggest going to more than one to really check it out if you decide to give that a go.
Nobody could have "made" me stop until I was ready.
I'm ready. No AL today.
