    Hi the Gear,

NIce to meet you. I know a lot of vets through my work as an exercise physiologist. I have the pleasure of hearing lots of their stories and really had my eyes opened as what it means to be a vet and the problems that you are left with etc. Good for you mate on gearing up to give up the grog and smokes. You say that the doc has given you meds...thats great and it will help heaps. Have you thought about some supps to help as well. Maybe you could get some vitamins to help ease your body through withdrawal and to settle your nervous system. I recommend vitamins B Complex, B12, B3, Vitamins C & E. Magnesium and calcium. A liver tonic (one with milk thistle as the main ingredient). Also lots of water, maybe an electrolyte replacement such as gatorade as well. Lemon juice in water is great for cravings and liver detox. Plan to have at least 5 -7 days to rest and recuperate. You probably wont sleep much for a little while, but that improves with time. If you notice your blood pressure and heart rate increasing dramatically or you start hallucinating and shaking uncontrollably...rush off for medical help a.s.a.p. Try to limit your sugar and caffeine intake, as these muck up you sugar and fluid balances and can sabotage your efforts. Stay on the boards and talk talk talk. Much strength to you.....saff

      Monday is the big day!!

I just started taking centrum multi vitamins to help with all of that. I will keep your advice in mind as to what to drink. I litterally don't drink anything in the evenings but beer so I am working on stocking my house with an alternative. You said in there to limit my sugar, but I had a friend a few days ago tell me to eat lots of sweets because its not the beer you crave but the sugar, since beer turns into sugar. Any thoughts on that?

Maybe for a few days indulge your sugar cravings, because you will go cold turkey on the sugar from beer, but after a while, try to wean yourself off and get your sugar from fruit and high complex carbohydrates. You want to ultimately have steady blood sugar levels so weaning off sugar and caffeine will benefit that. All the best.

            Welcome!

It sounds like you have a plan in place. Good thing your doctor is on board with you! It makes it easier when you have a support system in place!

                      Monday is the big day!!

                      Gearhead,

I wanted to make a suggestion on a drink alternative. I too have had mega sugar cravings since giving up al (35 days). It has finally started to subside but here is something that helps me as a drink replacement, especially at night as a cocktail replacement. Herbal tea with Agavi nectar. The Agave keeps you from having sugar spikes and the tea has no caffeine so won't disturb your sleep. The best tea I've found so far is called Tulsi. Don't know if you can find both/either, but they have helped me a lot. You could really do any kind of herbal with the Agave.

Best of luck. Sending you good sober vibes!

                      Hugs,
                      Choochie:l

                            Monday is the big day!!

Hi gearhead - I too am quitting both AL and Nicotine and so far so good - I have to just think of it all as MINDSET! I quit both at the beginning of the year and did well for 8 months, until I broke my foot and started both again. I have found that re the sugar cravings, lots of protein helps ease them - the more protein I had, the less the cravings bothered me. I personally found it a viscous cycle - the more sugar I had the worse the cravings were. By eating lots of protein, the cravings did abate somewhat. The cigs cravings aren't too bad - when they hit, I just remind myself that the nicotine left my system hours ago (stays in your system one hour) so it is habit I am craving and that craving will PASS. Try deep breathing - as if you are actually smoking - that sort of works too. PM me if you want - I am off to work and I work until 10.00 tonight - where in Missouri are you - I am nr St Louis. must get going.

hugs to you and hang in there.
