Need advice on something totally unrelated

Hi. I need advice. I'm coming clean without any of the usual pleasantries. I have mentioned on these boards before that I have a son who is in Japan and has given up drinking, but he has no support whatsoever, and he is skeptical about this program. But! He has a wonderful Korean girlfriend, whom he met in Japan. They were going to go to New York for Christmas, then fly to Dallas to see the family, then back to New YOrk to see friends. It turned out she needed a visa to leave Japan, and they didn't give it to her because she had an American boyfriend. Now, my son is depressed. He had planned to see my doctor for a Rx for topa, and he was going to try the program. I have contacted my U.S. senator and congressman. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get this precious girl out of Japan for vacation in the U.S.?

She does not need a Visa for travel. She needs a passport from Japan. Pursue the passport route and she should be able to travel.

    Good luck.

Yes I agree, for a short trip and not work I don't need any reason why she would need anything other than a Japanese passport.

Thanks so much for your help, but she does need a tourist visa to go from Japan to the states. Her tourist visa was denied. Yes, you would think that a passport would be sufficient for a two-week stay, but not so. She has done the whole application process already and was turned down. It's surprising how often this happens.

I wish I had something helpful to offer, Sophia, but I don't. I can only say that I am sorry that your son and his girlfriend are having a hard time getting something that would obviously be very beneficial for both of them. I feel so helpful. I hope someone here can come up with something useful for them! Best of luck and good wishes!

YOu guys are the best. I spent an hour on the phone with my son in Japan over skype (an amazing invention, by the way). One of the reasons he is disappointed about not being able to come home with his girlfriend (whom he won't leave) is that he can't get a Rx for topamax. Is there any way anyone can think of that he can get medication in Japan? I have extra, and I could send it to him, but I'm afraid it's too risky to send it through the mail. Any advice? He is making progress, and he's been sober for about 2 months now. I want to help him.

Kathy, your good sense and warmth almost seep through the computer screen. I'm glad to think of you as a friend.

Can he order the topa over the internet from one of the websites like others do? Maybe you could try sending ours also and pray it gets there?

The problem is that I don't want him or me to get into any trouble for sending or receiving them.

                  Chyrsa--
Thanks for your PM. Apparantly, your inbox is so full that I can't reply through it. So here is what I tried to send:
                  Thanks, sweetie
I saw your post earlier about having some to give away, and I thought about you. The problem is that I'm afraid that sending drugs internationally can get me or him into a lot of trouble, especially in Japan. When we went to Japan, they wouldn't let us out of customs until we had the actual address of our hotel. Luckily, me son had the hotel's address, and they were able to call his cell phone, or we might still be sitting in the airport. I do send him things, but I'm not sure whether they are checked or not.

Thanks for your kind comments, Sophia. Actually I meant to say helpless, rather than helpful! Duh! I do feel helpless in this situation, but I imagine that it is a mere fraction of how helpless you must feel. I wish the Japanese weren't being such dorks about this!!

I hope that you, or someone else, comes up with something useful soon! I'm sending some good vibes your way.

                    Hugs,

                    Kathy

Once again, I'm looking for help concerning my son's Christmas vacation/search for topa. Since they can't come home, my son and his girlfriend are going to Hong Kong. He is hoping that he can find an English-speaking dr. there who will prescribe topamax. Is there anyone out there who knows about drs. in Hong Kong or has any suggestions along these lines? We're thinking it's just too risky to try to send him meds in Japan, and finding a English-speaking dr. who will prescribe off-label meds to an American seems like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Thanks for your help, my friends across the world.

                        Sophia,

I've emailed a relative in Hong Kong for the name of a Western-trained psychopharmacologist. I'll let you know what I find out. One thing that your son could do would be to call one of the medical schools and try to get an appointment with someone in psychiatry. Addiction is finally being recognized as the big time problem that it has long been in the big cities of China. Calling a medical school would probably do it. I'm not sure if your son would encounter problems bringing the topa back into Japan. I've brought medicine from China to the U.S. with no difficulty but the Japanese might have different rules.

E, you amaze me. This board amazes me. I told my son, who has a block about this program, even though he's been sober for a couple of months, that I would get him an answer about HOng Kong from MWO. Thanks so much.

I emailed my relative who is yet to get back in touch with me. He is probably travelling. As soon as I hear from him, I'll let you know.

I just got this information. Your son could contact either Dr. Felice Lieh-Mak or Dr. Poy-Cheung Pan at the Department of Psychiatry, Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kong on Pokfulam Road. I'm sorry that I don't have the telephone number but your son should be able to obtain it easily.

                              Good luck.
