Hiya!!!! Made it through the work Christmas party/lunch sober! It was not too bad. Felt a little nervous at first but then just got into helping setting things up and making myself useful or whatever. HOWEVER, a few others did have a bit too much and may be a bit shamefaced tomorrow. It was pretty calm overall. And compared to the party two years ago where I ate NOTHING but poured wine down my throat...I ate like a pig and drank sparkling water. I feel great!!! Still keeping on my toes though--the holiday season is just starting so must keep on my guard. Isn't there a saying like "the battle was won but not the war" or something like that... Couscous-yum. NOT rice but kinda the same idea-here in France they call it semoule-that is the grain. The actual dish with meat or veg is then called couscous. Or so that's what they tell me. Like rice or spuds..it's really a poor man's meal to fill the stomach-the meat added was a plus! Sadly, even today here in France there are children who only have one "real" dinner at school and at home it is "semoule" .We have many North African immigrants here who brought the dish over-and now it's become a "national" dish-kind of like curry in England, I guess. OK, enough blabbing-I'll read back to catch up and then come back. expat xxx

Thats great Expat, well done you. I reckon every one of those we get through our confidence and self belief increases. You can and will make it through the season sober, just think how great that will feel on new years eve.
Thanks for the foodie lesson, I for one am always interested in that subject as you know :HEthanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?

Yes Mario! Whatever the saying...the war is not over yet. But I am going ODAT and the feeling of actually being helpful and able to make somewhat intelligent :H conversation at the work party really did make me feel great. AND I can look forward to going into work tomorrow without feeling ashamed-AND I was able to fetch my son from school (French kids finish school late-6 pm or so!) with a happy smile and able to greet the teachers like a fecking NORMAL parent. God, sounds almost pitiful saying that but it does feel good! OK-had a quick read back. Looks like I am not the only one struggling through the "holiday" season. Let's stick together through this. I know it is a difficult time for so many of us-for many different reasons. But let's not let the Army fall apart while times are rough. We need some of you "oldies" to give us a YEEEEHOOOO! And we have to remember that one bad feck up could be disatrous. Kids taken away, arrested, humiliated, car crash etc. Sorry to sound so extreme but ... I just thank my lucky stars, God or whoever..that I have not had anything too horrible happen to me because of the drink. I will not-CAN not- play with this. It can only take a minute to have our world turned upside down. Life can be shite enough but adding drink or drugs are just going to increase the chances of bad stuff to happen. Hey Expat well done on the Christmas Lunch!
I always see all these as hurdles and once we've made it over we are a bit further down the road.
It's quite ironic that I actually feel strong enough to go out to all the parties but I haven't got the money to go :H
Never mind McNotdreamy is taking me out for a special dinner on Saturday to a new restaurant......"In the depths of winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer ."
