Zeppie, I have a raving alkie SIL as well - I justified my drinking for years cos she was worse than me. She would open up and talk when we were both drinking but she'd prob hit me round the head now if I said a word so my instinct would be leave well alone

Do we all have a "raving alkie SIL":H? No, it's really not funny. I spoke a bit about my SIL over the holidays. She ended up spending the night in jail after Christmas! For drunk driving. THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD TALK TO HER ABOUT IT! She'd tear my head off too Molly! However, my brother and I were able to talk and I feel the whole situation has caused us to develop a closer relationship. He actually wrote me an email thanking me for talking with him about the problems with his wife. They are now separated-she's staying at her mum's. She was just out of control and it's been going on for years. But of course-got progressivly worse. My brother is actually considering divorce-which is not an easy thing in an Irish Catholic family. It's very sad because they have been married 20 yrs and their daughter just had a baby. Should be a beautiful time for them with their beautiful new grand-daughter but instead my niece had to see her mother brought away in a police car. It just makes me sick. So Z-maybe you can just concentrate on being there for your brother for the time being. :l expat

As you probably know Mr JC is a solicitor and he does 24 hour on call duties 2 or 3 times a month and he's finding it's more and more it's drunk women that he's being called out for. Most of the time they are so hammered they can't be interviewed until they sober up so they need a visit from the duty doctor. Anything from assault, robbery and he recently had a woman who tried to set fire to her BF's house.

I have heard the same thing JC. And it's women from every social class. I think what really sent my brother over the edge was the fact that he had sent her to a very expensive rehab a few weeks before Christmas, went to counseling sessions together, prayed, cried with her...But as WE KNOW VERY WELL-it has to be the person themself to decide they want to be sober. When she got out of jail the next day she was in a horrible mood and started verbally abusing my brother. And throwing shite. And poured herself a drink. She made it seem like it was all HIS fault. That is when he cracked and said "I can't do this anymore". Even though I am angry with her and will not approach her-I do hope she will finally feel like she has hit "rock bottom" and get some help. OK-better go do some cleaning-blah. laters

Morn Waggie, Expat, my SIL also went to a rehab some years ago, personally I think my BIL is a bollix he's 'not an alkie' cos he only drinks in the pub 7 nights a week, never at home - wot a good guy - anyhows, while she was in rehab he visited her smelling of beer, she checked herself out and has gone downhill ever since. I have heard my hubs and his bro. talking about her with such absolute disdain that I wonder to they speak about me like that. Her son comitted suicide when he was 16 - I don't think in anyway related to her drinking - wasn't that bad then (bout 10 yrs ago) and I have heard Bollix saying on a few occasions that she can't keep dragging that one up as an excuse - nice huh. Reckon that's the family I married into. As you may guess from this rant I am in angry mode!
