One of my favourite inspirational songs

This guy will be sadly missed by me.

The lyrics of this song really resonate with me, and pretty much describe where my mind was in my earlier years when I was trying to make sense of the world. Listening to this song still sends shivers up and down my spine when I listen to the words.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkS169P_Eeo[/video]]YouTube - Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you'll drink the night away
    And forget about everything.

This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything.

You used to think that it was so easy,
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin', you're tryin' now.
Another year and then you'd be happy
Just one more year and then you'd be happy
But you're cryin', you're cryin' now.

Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door, he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been, you tell him who you've seen
    And you talk about anything.

He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down, it's a quiet little town
    And forget about everything.

But you know he'll always keep movin'
You know he's never gonna stop movin'
Cause he's rollin', he's the rollin' stone.
And when you wake up it's a new morning
The sun is shining, it's a new morning
But you're going, you're going home.

        Another wake up call.
Yes. People actually die because of this "beverage".

Thanks Kev for posting that. I've always loved that song, too...

It's a real wakeup call for me when I hear of people actually dying from this disease. I think I sometimes lull myself into thinking of drinking as a social problem, not really a HEALTH problem. But it really is. So sad for him and for his family.

Yes it came as news to me that he had alcohol issues.

Its amazing that he did not listen to his own song, get the message and do what the song says ...

"He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands "

That was where I was at in the 70's when this song came out. I did manage the buying land part, and also gave up the one night stands (got married).

I suppose that I also sort of gave up the booze because I was a major league drinker before I got married, whereas once I got married and had responsibilites, I got some sort of control over the drinking. But the control has probably always been a grim, white-knuckle sort of control with periods of falling back into the abyss and disgracing myself.
