Wonder how many are reformed drinkers? Some have notes about who quit drinking but I wonder if many of the others are just not notated (like Elton John)?? Interesting - thanks for posting.

Yes it looks like quite a few are reformed drinkers. I would imagine that Angus Young the lead guitarist from AC/DC was put off drinking after the lead singer Bon Scott choked to death on vomit after a massive bender which (allegendly) involved drinking a bottle of whiskey.

I will be doing a bit of research on these non-drinking guys because I am very interested in how to live the low or zero alcohol life-style.

Quitting is easy for me, I have done it hundreds of times. The bit where I have failed is in filling the void that is left without alcohol in my life. So historically after quitting, the alcohol has gradually crept back into my life, and then I have to do it all over again.

This list of eminent non-drinkers gives me a very rich and fertile area to look for the answers to that question. (Bit of a shame that Adolf Hitler is on the list though :H )

Well, now that would be incentive, wouldn't it? :H

Barry Humphries aka Dame Edna is a wonderful example of the reformed drinker. A terrific role model.

Sadly there is probably an element of truth in that. Hitler was consumed by passionate and clear beliefs in what he wanted to achieve, and there was probably little room in his life for such diversions as drinking.

I remember when I used to run marathons, all the training and activities associated with running, along with a demanding job and being a father of three kids, kept me so busy that alcohol was not an issue in my life for many years. The running also provided a social life with healthy friends who were focussed on being fit and healthy. In some ways I had replaced a negative addiction with a positive addiction back in those days.

Then I got too many running injuries and had to quit, the kids grew up and left and with all the spare time on my hands the alcohol crept back in.

I guess I am currently looking for a new activity that will serve the purpose that running did. The objective would be to get so busy doing fun, positive things so that the drinking would just wither away and fade as an issue. Dabbling with walking, sailing, kayaking, learning guitar etc, but I am what Barbara Sher calls a "Scanner", which means that I can never settle on one thing for very long.
