How much does exercise help you?

    Hi all,

    I am just curious...

I am currently not wrestling with drinking but I am with other inner demons (largely as a result of drinking). I find that exercise definitely does not cure anything (mentally) but can definitely take me from a hugely depressed place to a much less depressed place.

I know when I absolutely hit a wall I crank up the exercise - how many of you can relate??

I feel much better when I've had the chance to exercise, whether that be lifting weights, bike riding or mowing the lawn..which I happen to find rather enjoyable, I do like mowing the lawn. I also sleep better as well if I've had some sort of workout.

That is the one thing I am not doing. I am over two months sober, have lost 12 pounds, but my energy level is not where it should be - I can't get the damn energy to get off my ass to do it. I need to make an appointment for a physical. I NEED TO EXERCISE (Other than chasing my kids up and down the stairs)

I need to exercise too. I just feel so tired all the time. I am trying to force myself and am hoping to start feeling better.

Wag - I have Pee Wee Herman on my phone. I forgot that I had it turned up and all of a sudden here I am at work. Imagine Pee Wee's voice - "excuse me, excuse me, ha, ha, excuse me". :H:H

Aust, when we find something absolutely mindless to do, it helps. I love long walks, climbs in my mountains, but I have to remember to look and learn, not think too much.

I love the gym, I go 4-5 days a week and work out for 90 min or so and I feel great when I get done!

                Hey...
I credit exercise with lifting me out of my depression two and a half years ago. I love it...it is cathartic and a great stress relief. I am a trainer who I see twice a week and i also go to the gym twice a week. I have bags of energy and my work outs are so much more effective now that I quit drinking. If only the weightless would come.

It will, Cass. But remember - muscle weighs more than fat, so being the same weight, but toned, is a great thing!

Aye ruby! I need to get into that mentality. I am a numbers gal though and it's always nice to see the pounds melting away in black and White.

I weigh about twice a month. But I feel my muscle weakness every day. Have a med condition that makes exercise very dicey, and I HATE feeling weak. Have always been a tomboy (girl, teen, woman, grandmother!!! :H)

I love long distance running and I think it does a world of good. It's been tough with the winter snow and ice however I get out as much as possible and really feel it if I don't. It might not cure anything but it is a real nice addition to the plan.

I agree with you allswell, and in fact I'd go so far to say it does help cure my depression and lethargy as the endorphins get flowing and sets me up for the day/to sleep at night.

                              allswell and english,
long distance running or anything aerobic definitely cures something for me. Maybe it's the endorphins or maybe it's just the thought of them. If I don't exercise, at least a little, I feel my day is incomplete.
And when I drink, I go for days without exercising.
There's no excuse at least for me for not getting out there, my knees, my feet, my back...you can always find something to get those endorphins flowing. Water aerobics??
I'm from New Mexico. There's a rehab center here totally structured around aerobic exercise.
                              Good luck all.
