    Underoos associates Feb 2011

    Hi folks,

Well I've just returned from a ski weekend. Totally exhausted but in a very good way. Still thinking about Rags and how exciting it was to meet her and husband. This past Friday I met them at their hotel in Times Square. Rags presented me with a Russian style bear hug. It was wonderful. Oh, many kisses. Yup lots. We then headed in the direction of Grand Central. We toured the station and they both seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Rags took a few photo's which will no doubt get posted on MWO upon her return.

We had lunch at Cafe Centro which is in the Met Life building adjacent to the station. It was very easy to talk both of them into the New York strip steaks. They were delicious. We talked and talked kissed and hugged. Rags brought me many goodies. I am now sporting a lovely pair of Blundstone boots, a very nice shirt, two cute Koala's that don't bite, and a yummy jar of her homemade jam. Oh yeah, someone sent me a jar of Vegemite too. Rags mentioned that I need to spread it thin. No problem there Last by not least I found two lovely little golden orbs tucked comfortably in a container. I was amazed that they were able to survive such a long journey to the U.S. I have them on my bedside table. If they're there this time next year, perhaps I'll seek the counsel of a professional. The visit, the gifts brought me such joy.

After lunch we hugged and kissed some more. I then directed them back toward their hotel with the request that they stop and peek in the New York Public Library on their was past 5th Avenue. All in all it was a wonderful, tearful, and exciting time. I shall treasure the memory.

Yea, but look what he does with them! If I knew he'd wanted something for his bloody bedside table, I would have sent a Blinky Bill night light.

And what's with old Rags? Two minutes in the USofA and she goes all touchy-feely-kissy-wissy-have-a-nice-day-throbby on us. Doesn't she know we've got a reputation to uphold? We're supposed to be a nation of aloof, unsentimental and distant women. Well she's blown that big time ...

sorry to change the subject, but I'm livid!!

This little gem just comes from a report of the Welfare working group in NZ, that released its report today, and aims to toughen up benefit requirements. It is amongst a whole lot of other recommendations, including requiring women who have additional children while they are on a benefit to seek work from the time the baby is 14 weeks old.

The Welfare Working Group recommends that:

            a) either failing or refusing to take an employment related alcohol or drug test be regarded as not complying with the job search obligation, with associated consequences, and that this expectation be clearly communicated;

            b) subject to the Government addressing long-standing issues with the availability of drug and alcohol services (which we recommend be addressed as a matter of urgency) a person who fails or is likely to fail a drug or alcohol test due to drug or alcohol dependence, be offered the option of voluntarily agreeing to drug and alcohol treatment. Refusal to accept this offer would be a failure to meet job search obligations; and

            c) in circumstances where a person?s drug or alcohol dependence is endangering his or her well-being or the well-being of children, management of their welfare payment be put in the hands of a responsible third party, or another form of income management, until the drug or alcohol issue is resolved.

I think it just goes to show how little understanding there is about addiction generally (not to mention the fact that there is totally inadequate availability of support services)

yes, and this time there is likely to have been people affected seriously as it hit the middle of the city right on lunchtime.

Phone and internet cxns are out so nobody can contact anyone.

ditto here ...... deaths have been confirmed. We have a few people in the office who have friends and family there, and who haven't been able to make contact with them. I've am doing a bit of work with people there at the moment and I feel quite .... I was going to say shaken, but that's a terrible word to use in the circumstances.

Missy, the pics on the tele are terrible. I wish I could stop watching, but I can't seem to tear myself away from it.
Love and hugs along with prayers for all involved.
I keep my bulbs in the vegie crisper, too. Plant them when the weather turns cold. We have a late, dry start to Winter here, so that's why I've been leaving the planting until later. I used to plant them early March before the weather changed.

Techie, your meeting with Rags and her hubby sounds wonderful. I would so love to have been there.

Tawny, what wonderful guests. This rare breed of visitors restores one's faith in folk of manners.

Just to let everyone be assured that I am okay. Interestingly, I didn't feel a thing and only found out when I did because I was chasing another news story about the Welfare Working Group. That is reassuring for me, as it suggests that where our office is is built on pretty solid ground.

But it was felt at the other end of town, where there has been some land reclamation and buildings were evacuated there.

I'm afraid that there is going to be a lot of bad news out of this one. I went out a wee while ago, and people are out on the streets glued to televisions and radio. Some of the scenes are pretty horrific. I've resisted checking on friends who live there, as Civil Defence has asked everyone to stay off Chch phone lines because people are trapped in buildings in the inner city and need the lines to be free. But I'm very worried about a friend of mine who works in one of the hospitals that has been damaged and her husband who works in Cathedral Square. And I know another friend will be going spare because his kids go to school in the inner city but he works about 20km away.

not much work getting done anywhere here this afternoon.
