RC, I wonder when they will understand that Native Canadian and American Indians have a severe problem with alcohol. If someone takes offense with what I've said then they should check this out...

                            American Indian alcoholism
                            From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
                            Jump to: navigation, search

American Indians have historically had extreme difficulty with the use of alcohol. At times American Indians have made paupers of themselves to obtain alcohol.[1] Problems continue among contemporary Indians with 12% of the deaths among American Indians and Alaska Natives being alcohol related. Use of alcohol varies by age, gender and tribe with women, and older women in particular, being least likely to be regular drinkers. Indians, particularly women, are more likely to abstain entirely from alcohol than the general US population. Frequency of use among American Indians is generally less than the general population, but the quantity consumed when it is consumed is generally greater.[2]

A survey of death certificates over a four year period showed that deaths among Indians due to alcohol are about 4 times more common than in the general US population and are often due to traffic collisions and liver disease with homicide, suicide, and falls also contributing. Deaths due to alcohol among American Indians are more common in men and among Northern Plains Indians. Alaska Natives showed the least incidence of death.[3] Alcohol abuse by Indians has been shown to be associated with development of disease, including sprains and muscle strains, hearing and vision problems, kidney and bladder problems, head injuries, pneumonia, tuberculosis, dental problems, liver problems and pancreatitis.[4]

Indian youth are far more likely to experiment with alcohol than mainstream youth with 80% alcohol use reported. Low self-esteem is thought to be one cause. Active efforts are underway to build self-esteem among youth and to combat alcoholism among American Indians.[5]
Perhaps if the government took some restrictive measures or was more active in educating them about the dangers of alcohol among them, we would not have read that article.

It's best you can't read it Jackie. And I wish I hadn't read either it or Oney's link.

Today has been a day full of bad news. With Queensland and cyclone Yasi in the forefront. Not meaning to diminish the dangers of the snow and freezing weather that has hit the U.S. but at least they won't have their houses blown to bits or damaged and possibly destroyed by floods. Not to mention the loss of businesses, crops, livestock, wildlife and on and on. It's just heartbreaking to think about it. Sorry to be such a downer but it is bothering me a lot. Having "met" the Undies, I feel somehow "connected" to Australia in a way that I wasn't before. Don't know how to explain it really.
Glad to know that for the most part, MWO members are relatively safe and sound - just some of us experiencing really crappy weather but nothing more.
RC - talked to my Mom on Monday - the temps were to go down to -31C. Guess you must be having about the same there. And snow. Patience, dear girl. This too shall pass.:huggy

:l:l:l Stirly. I only briefly watched the news today. Here in France on cable we get Sky, BBC and CNN (English speaking channels). It has been non-stop coverage of Egypt--which is international news--I won't disagree with that--but barely touched any news on Australia or anywhere else on that matter! I try to stay away from articles about children being abused. Not easy though. It does make me sick to my stomach--but perhaps if it wakes people up to the dangers of .... Anyway! The world is a scary enough place without adding drinking and smoking into the equation. I guess all I want to try and say is...we can only do the best we can--and avoid the stupid stuff-and then hope and pray for the best.
