    Army Thread Wednesday 16th March

Are you completely deaf? Im deaf in my right ear since birth.
Severely deaf in both ears Chilli - about a 75 dB loss if that means anything to you.

When you say that everyone speaks English, I presume you mean as a second language with Portuguese as their first language?

Reccie - I live in the Algarve which is the heart of tourism so all the local Portuguese speak English perfectly and the ex pat community is huge so my friends are a mix of Brittsh, American, French, Polish, German etc and we all converse in English as our common language. Have you been deaf since birth?

Ok, thanks for that advice Cassia.

I do lip read a fair bit without having had any formal training. Had actually recently been thinking about getting some lessons or more likely buying lip-reading DVDs.

Reccie - that sounds like a good idea. You know you can do it - why not hone the skill?

Right - I am going to do something I don't normally do and go into chat.

My hearing gradually deteriorated through the course of my life. How bad is yours, Chilli?

What about dealing with paperwork from official bodies like local government or electricity companies? What language is that in?

I can hear pretty well in my left ear but obviously when people are on the wrong side of me I cant hear a thing, over the years id perfected that nodding look as if I know whats going on when i dont.

Most places speak English because of the high no. of Brits that have homes here, for example I recently needed a helpline for internet problems and I was put through to an English speaking operator. There are plenty people to help with translations, i.e. Lawyers, accountants for anything important and for smaller stuff there is a local office who will handle all sorts of stuff for you for a small fee.
