Underoos and other possom bottoms - April 2011

    Oh Reg, TF,

Have you been to 'Harambe', African tucker in i think Nicholson st. Footscray? I went there off hours one day with an Ethiopian colleague. Haven't tried the food yet, but it's a cool set up. Yer 'authentic' African theme caper, but i hear the quality of the food is good.

        Enjoy the gig Mr B!

Inspired by Bridgee's attempts to up her fibre intake, I am going to go back to the gluten-free thing again this week. In preparation I just had two large and freshly baked german-style rolls - complete with cream cheese (lite!) tomato and basil leaves

So from now on there is no gluten, caffeine, processed sugar or alcohol. Until Good Friday when I promised my Mum and our neighbours a big batch of hot cross buns :H

Got a housekeeping type question for the Undies ... guys, how much do youse all pay for your private innernet and phone (landline & mobile combined)?

I'm clobbered for $100per month innernet (via satellite) and another $70pm for the phone (landline only). Is this within the "norm"? If this is too rude a question, ignore me or PM if you'd prefer. I'm looking at other options ...

TF - this is one of my favourite soap boxes!!!

Charges in NZ and Australia are totally excessive (even more so in NZ than Oz) compared to US or even EU. Dont even get me started on talking about roaming charges!!!! (we got stung for a $1000 bill for one of our people who just accidentally left her (NZ) phone on in Sydney)

Your charges may be within the Australian norm, but they still seem very high. We have internet for $10 per month and unlimited downloads .... but this is a small and boutique company that Mr B had been with for years, and doesn't have a help desk as it relies on its customers knowing what they are doing! If I was reliant on commercial companies I would be expecting to pay $40 - $120 per month depending on expected usage (mine would probably be at the upper end!)

Telephone services - I only do pre-pay, for both my phone and my i-pad. And I do as much as I can on Skype (both of which I can increasingly do on my i-pad!)

I think my land-line is around $50 per month, but it is regulated here - costs kept low to ensure that people in isolated areas or who are vulnerable continue to be able to afford a land line.

I generally believe that IT and phone companies in this region are engaged in price-gouging.... but also believe that greater competition would result in poorer quality services if we continue to be dominated by the big US and Euro multi-nationals. When I can, I use Asian and Indian call-companies (we have pre-pay cards here in local dairies, and i just log in from my home phone). I bought a $NZ10 card about 15 months ago in Singapore and chat to him there for about an hour every couple of weeks. The card still hasn't been used up. My brother in Atlanta and I skype most weeks for free. But when I call my sister in Hamilton (about 500km away) , I get a bill from Telecom informing me that due to their special weekend rates it only cost me $8.80 (or whatever) and that I saved $66 (or whatever).

Anyway, TF, they are ripping us off. I have about as much regard for telecom companies as i do for banks, financial institutions and insurance companies.

However, international capitalism rules, so I work my way around it :H

              Here ya Froglet.

Telstra.....$89 big ones per month, free local calls, national calls capped at $2.95 any time day or night. 2GB internet download, then they slow you to 65 which is enough to make you want to crack your head on summat. Free broadband modem, but don't know whether you're in a broadband area. Not entirely convinced that I am getting the speed that I am paying for, which is currently the highest available. Could be local factors.

              Bundle and Save - Telstra

Mobile is seperate with '3' $22 big ones per month including free calls to the boy (all other 3 mobiles) and stacks of free texts. Calls are expensive, but I don't make many of em.

TF - With Optus, $110 per month, includes unlimited internet, local, national and mobile phone calls. Came unstuck a few times on other plans with limited gig so opted for this and it works, given the downloads 3 kids and assorted i pods can wreak. Have 3 mobiles with optus also on another plan, Mr H has one and the boys share one which costs $10 each per month, BYO phone and 100 text messages per month, and phone calls to optus included in package. Mine coz i've got a blackberry - which is paid thru optus $0 but thats bs - is on a $29 a month plan - so roughly the mobiles $50 per month for the 3. Oh yeah when I stayed with optus and got the blackberry they have me a six month subs to Gourmet Traveller which is still going over a year later....hope they dont remember and stop I love the magazine...Use Skype for international calls too.

Thanks HEAPS for all your input, Undies. Sure gives me stuff to digest and work on. At lunch today, someone suggested Telstra 3G might be the most appropriate for me but more research is required. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to give me your thoughts.

Lunch was great. 1.00pm - 5.00pm. Brilliant, innovative, non country pub food ... including Duck 3 ways, Kangaroo cigars, Quail ... really interesting, beautifully presented, tasty stuff. Nice, joyful and intelligent people who have left me with a lot of good things to think about. Noice!

Early night for the Jones crew.

The boy came home from a contact visit with a 'tude that's been building up for days.

Nope. It's all over for today folks.
