... talk to Mrs.google and read up on straw bale. Beats mud brick hands down.

Ok I've had a bit of a chat...some absolutely superb looking buildings out there.

      Few Q's
      1. How does it hold up with water proofing. Is the Froghouse bale or mud ? I thought it was mud for some reason.

      2. Was planning permission difficult ? Of course this will vary area to area.

      3. What about fire ratings ?

      4. Any problems with building insurance ? Ins. companies are a bit skittish I suppose, although when you see some of the old dry timber cottages out there, right in the middle of the bush, they'd go up like a tinder box.

Isn't it a beautiful, flexible medium though ? Really impressed with the ability to put curves into walls, create dormers etc.

Hmm.....will I ever get off the computer again ?:H

It would be so nice to be able to grant Undies their wishes.

I'll get back to you on the straw bale stuff. Gotta chase some sheep.

You're not trying to perpetuate commonly held international myths about Strayans and New Zulunders are you ?

Good call on the straw bale idea Tawny, from what I have seen of it, its a cracking idea. Mostly all renewable sources and its eco friendly. RE fire hazard, sure most buildings this side of the world are timber frame now with brick/block exteriors and if you get your cladding/plaster right then straw build is no more a fire hazard or insurance risk. Ditto water proofing. Be back for more of this talk in the morning, tis late now.

                  Tassie appeals enormously too.

                  .
You could be neighbours with Bob Brown, or Peter Cundall, or Sally Wise... I listened to her yesterday on ABC giving the scrummiest recipe for sweet chilli sauce.

                    Morning all.
Bridge - have you seen "The Gourmet Farmer" - an ex food critic moves from Sinny to Tassie, Huon Valley I think, & is trying to live as self sufficiently as possible - be right up yer alley I imagine. I love it.

Love the gourmet farmer Cakes....Matt isn't it ?

It's just when they get into chicken carnage that I have to switch off. Is that gutless ?

Hey Raggsy, Bill Mollison lives down there too, North West I think, with a young chicky babe and a kiddy. Mate of mine has a property near theirs.

                        Morning all,

Tawny, you mean you're NOT the fairy godmother??

Straw bale sounds grouse mate! We've sure seen how waterproof it has been in the frog's case during the recent floods, as i think the only leakage occurring came pouring in through the front door, if i'm correct?

Have been having some late nights recently whilst i'm on hol's. Just starting to chill now, actually. I looked in the mirror first thing this morning, and face was a little puffy due to heavy sleepage etc, but it reminded me for a second of how i'd look for a few hours after a night on the turp's. Thank christ that circus has left town! On another note, i love the early mornings to which i will soon return, but there is a magic in the wee hours, non? A time for beautiful music, and__________________________making luurve. :h:h

But isn't anytime a good time for music and luurve. :l

                        A marvellous day to all!

Holy heck, Bridge - just did a quick google and can'tbelieve the amount of info that's now available on Straw Bale construction. When I did mine about 15 years or so ago, the only thing I could find was this book and it became my bible. The Straw Bale House by A Steen, B Steen & D Bainbridge 336pp No idea why it's now so expensive - maybe your library could get it in for you?

I am totally biased toward straw bale (against mud brick) and would do it again, without reservation.

Hiya MrG - cross posted - and yep, totally waterproof, vermin proof etc etc etc and the best part is ... I grew it myself! Literally.

Yeah, Matt someone...I suspect he's gay, although not camp at all. He's written a few books - one called "Never Order Chicken on a Monday", good read.
Chook carnage - not at all, I have issues with cleaning the dead chook from the supermarket for roasting. But I love him when he's done...mmmm, chicken skin.
I'm off to get my teeth whitened today (yes, you read correct) got a deal so it's cheep cheep.
Warney inspired me with his blinders.
                            Lata.

PS G-matey, Lady Gaga needs you real bad. Work out her chorri would you mate, she's all over the shop.

Morning all you bewdifulll bewdifulll folks,

Having an awesome day. Started off with a walk through mist laden hills that snaked along a pristine bubbly river...traversing bubbling waterfalls and frog green moss covered boulders that formed tiny magical pools with wonderful fernery and possibly inhabited by platypus. Finally wound our way to an idyllic sandy beach of the most exquiste crytsalline sand. Sat in the sun gazing at the suns rays casting millions of twinkling diamond on an ocean so silent and still. Ah the sheer bliss of this tiny island, I wouldnt live anywhere else if you paid me a million bucks. BTW I have just erected a massive sign at out northern most point. Had to hitch it to a few lighthouses and a rocky headland with my newly acquired knottage skills. It reads: MAINLANDERS FUSK ORF!!!!!! luv yas but not THAT much xxxxxx
