      I ended up pulling a string of about a dozen shirts all tied to each other.
      Is there an odd sock tangled in there as well.

              Well there's yer problem.

              As a fully unqualified washing machine engineer all I can recommend at this moment in time is you stick your head in the drum and shout rude words at the sock fairy. This is only a temporary solution as sock fairies have minds of their own.

              Other than that put said shirts in one at a time.

                        Thanks zenny. I'll dig out the manual if it's still around and find out how to do the gentle cycle. I've only ever used the one cycle before for everything (it saves me having to think). And if that doesn't work I will try shouting at the SF as per our resident fully unqualified washing machine engineer's recommendation.

                              I've a digital camera for nigh on to five years and only know how to use the one setting. The extra simple one. For simpletons....
