5 days sober - and literally NO sleep at all

and to put it bluntly - starting to get so pissed off and grumpy. Oh well I guess I'll drop with exhaustion eventually. Probably about when hubbie gets home from America. Even bloody running isnt making me sleep and normally after a long run I can. I am however still sober lol

Have you tried any natural herbal teas -like " Celestial Seasonings-Sleepytime"tea- I think it has valerian in it that helps make you tired-or even a warm glass of milk?
    It's always YOUR choice!

mumofsix I suffered from imsomnia too. It was strange to sleep without any AL in my body. Now it's the complete opposite. I sleep so soundly! The best dreams ever! dont give up. x

mum, we all go through a lot of different things while our body and mind adjust to the changes from being sober. Last night, for instance, I was still awake at 3:30 AM, and it's been ages since I had a drink, and years since my last binge. This too shall pass, love, and good, normal, restorative sleep will come. Remember, you didn't get here overnight, and you CAN get back to the real you. Just having my grands here for 3 days exhausted me, so I KNOW you are a busy bee. Keep posting, keep talking about your feelings and what you're going through. That's one of the true beauties of this forum.

i'm a total insomniac for the first week or so after stopping the drink...i've slept about 3-4 hours a night in the past 4 days.

it's pretty normal...our poor bodies have been through it and it takes a while for them to normalize.

i use plain old magnesium in a high dose to relax and that helps sometimes.

at least you can come here and commiserate!

Thanks everyone ***big wave from a dawn breaking New Zealand** Its 6.13am and I think I got about 3 hours sleep but it looks like its going to be a beautiful day. Hubbie will ring at 7am and that'll help - only got till Friday and then he'll be home and the kids for two weeks of school holidays. My baby comes home from University on Sunday too! I have to admit this is alot like giving up smoking lol. I take LOTS of supplements for running so hopefully this'll help.

Yeah I will - nothing will drive me to drink - dont worry. Just realised that sleep depravation torture like they did in the war (maybe still do I dont know) wouldnt work on me! Oh well better get up, hubbie will ring in a minute to tell me what FUN hes had.
Me I feel like such a BITCH this morning and so GRUMPY.

Being something of a Type A myself--but lacking a great deal of your drive and stamina--I think that sleep issues often come with this genetic makeup. I sure seem to have known alot of driven types who suffer from recurrent or chronic insomnia.

My sleep patterns haven't really improved much since I quit drinking. I still fall asleep easily at bedtime most nights, then wake up frequently throughout the night, and usually awaken and stay that way around 5:30 or 6 am, no matter what time I've gone to bed. If I go to bed really early, this pre-sunrise wake up isn't such a big deal, but if it's 11 or later to bed, I feel kind of zoned the next day. Running everyday hasn't made much difference to my sleep either, but it sure helped to drop the extra weight quickly--as has quitting AL. In fact, I have to be conscious now to eat enough calories everyday to maintain, something I have never experienced before, even in adolescence!

Yeah its very funny! I can get four hours sleep a night and feel like Im fine. Will wake up slightly sluggish and lie in bed and have a cup of tea before the kids wake up and then start my day. once Im awake its all on and like ive had 8 hours

I think you make a good point about sleep issues being common with this genetic makeup. Count me as another one who consistently wakes up pre-dawn. My hour seems to be in the 4:00 AM range. It's like I know that I will wake up and the clock will be 4-something. This happens 85% of the time, and like you it doesn't matter what time I go to bed.

I work both first and second shifts so when I get to bed late on second shift the 4-AM wake up leaves me tired the next day. One thing I have found that helps is to get up and have a cup of warm milk. I add malt flavor so it's kind of like hot chocolate. After about 30 mins I can sometimes go back to sleep for a couple hours. If I lay there thinking about my insomnia I NEVER get back to sleep, lol.

This is SUCH a common theme among us alcoholics!!

I was telling a friend who is going through the same thing that once in an 8 week rehab, one that only gives homeopathic meds for sleep, that it took me 5 weeks to start getting a good night's sleep.

By that, I averaged 4-6 hours of sleep, but I have done that all my life, even as a teenager, pre-drinking days. However, I function fine and feel refreshed after that much sleep.

                          btw, my "pre-dawn" today was 2:30 a.m.

                          However, I feel fine.

You will get there mum. The sleep you will get from being abstinent for a time is REAL sleep. REM sleep.

Alcohol messes with the REM sleep and even though you sleep from alcohol, it is not a good, restful sleep.

6 hours of abstinent sleep is so much better than any amount of alcohol induced sleep.

Give it time. It does get better after the first week and then around 5 weeks, suddenly you realize you are truly sleeping.

Too bad I keep going back to square one and having to start all over again. :upset:

                          Love,

Have you tryed Benadryl, makes me sleep like a baby. It's not addictive and the doc says its fine. It's pollen season here so I wake up without allergies too!
