    Update.

    Good Afternoon Folks!
I've been keeping my head down for a bit. Things are pretty hectic, but here's a potted version.
My daughter just had her fourth baby; a girl named Anya, apparently another name from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Both are healthy, though my daughter is completely worn out.
Work has changed my shifts again. 7pm until 3am. It's hectic and often not enough time for a tea break, but I'm learning the processes and hopefully my diligence will pave the way to some decent prospects there, though sometimes it feels as if the bosses are smirking in the way that bosses do, having found someone who wants to get on, but knowing that he won't. Not worried though. It's a job and I'm happy to have one.
I'm also in the process of renovating my old house. It's a bit of a grind to be honest, but it won't take too long and it's a nice old place, and it'll save us a lot of money in the long run.
I've also been seeing some medical people regarding some mild loss of feeling in my hands and feet, and a short term memory problem that seems to be getting rapidly worse. I've been for blood tests, brain scans and electric nerve testing and have regular visits to a psychiatrist to see if there's anything up and it seems that all the years of horrible alcohol abuse and smoking have damaged my brain a lot more that the rest of my body. They tested me for everything they can think of and I'm still waiting for some results to come through, but it seems there's a bit of my brain where, as my doctor put it, "there are lots of tiny burst blood vessels. It's really just like a series of mini-strokes." It's not really effecting my daily doings, but sometimes I get a little lost and wonder what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, which is a bit worrisome at work, but quite amusing elsewhere.
The bottom line, so far as they know, is that having stopped drinking and smoking, it shouldn't get any worse but it won't get any better. I've to take aspirin to thin my blood so it doesn't clog up any more of the blood vessels that may lead to a full on stroke, (for which apparently, I'm a prime contender). Eating well and excercise are also good (Dah!!) so that's the plan.
I'm also delving a little more into my spiritual side. I'm not religious, but it seems to me that if you can be happy or sad, then happy is the way to go. It's a bit deeper than that, but I hope you get the idea.
All in all though, I'm doing OK. Way better than I was in the bad old days and grateful for it.
    Well, back to the grind.
    Take care everyone.
    Paul

Good to hear from you Pops. So sorry about the brain damage tho but as ever you seem to be taking it in your stride. I expect your new addition might be helping on that score?
I am exploring my spiritual side more too, very fulfilling its turning out to be.

        Update.

Great to hear from you pops.
Sorry to hear bout your brain issues. I notice at times I forget things. Simple things like I go upstairs to turn the water heater on, get to the bedroom and forget why im there. I spend alot of time worrying bout my liver and kidneys when I imagine its my brain that has taken the majority of a battering.
Great to hear your doing well other than that and many congrats on being a grandad again.
You'll have to let me know when your next going on a hiking trip via fb. Im DETERMINED to do more this yr with regards to walks and a bit of camping!
        All the best.

                  Update.

Hey Paul - ditto to what the others said about your positive attitude. And congrats on the new grand-daughter - lovely name.
I'm so sorry about the damage to your brain but at least it will not go downhill from here as long as you continue the way you've been doing for the last while. You're definitely on the right track with no AL and not smoking and good for you with the proper diet and exercise programme.
Best of luck with the renovations. Maybe we could have a picture or two when it's finished.
And please don't be a stranger here. It's so good to hear from the Army folk and we worry when they're MIA...

                      Update.

Pops wonderful to hear from you!

You attitude is inspiring and it sounds to me like you have made up with what you have in your heart anything you've lost in your mind. I too am not religious but my spiritual path is helping me tenfold with adapting the attitude to guide me through difficult times. Our happiness is indeed a choice we make and I think we ex drinkers realize this more than most once we have taken back control of our lives.

I'm back living in Scotland as of last week and one of these days our paths may cross, sending you much love.

                          Update.

                          G'day Popeye,

Congratulation's on the birth of your grand daughter!

I can lose track of my conversation too if i'm not careful. It is amusing to me, but now you bring this up, i think there must be a connection to my years of al (self) abuse. Best wishes with the test's, and i know the mind and body have an uncanny way of adapting for the better when we look after ourselves as you are doing.

(p.s. I've written a song inspired by your mountain climbing. The fantastic pics you posted a couple of months ago set me off!)

                          Great to hear from you.

Hi Pops!! So good to *see* you. Congrats on the new grand baby! Anya is a pretty name, and even cooler is she favors a vampire slayer or something! I'm so sorry to hear about the brain issues. I hope it gets no worse for you. We are so blessed to be sober and not causing that sort of damage these days. I bet your home is going to be fabulous. You inspire...:l

Thanks for checking in and letting us know how you are doing. It is good for all of us to know that despite our life challenges, the best approach is to remain alcohol free.
