Went to the neurologist today

Well I had been seizure free for many years. Then my dumb ass new doctor put me on wellbutrin for depression. I did not realize it was wellbutrin because the pill label said a generic name. Having had a seizure disorder for 20 years, documented, you think a doc who looked at my records would not put one on a drug that is known to cause seizures. but she did and I had 3 grand mals in one day.

When I found out what happened I left her after expressing my anger at her.


That was January. I had no more seizures until two weeks ago. My father died unexpectedly, I have always had a topsy turvy relationship with him. My cat also died and I started having increased panic attacks and started drinking even heavier than usual. So two weeks ago I had a grand mal at work. I came out of it-didn't go to the hospital and my doc put me on Dilantin.

Well when I saw the neurologist today he was very nice. I had been doing research on here and discovered that Topomax is prescribed for combating not drinking AND is a seizure disorder med. I talked to him about wishing to be on that and hopefully killing two birds with one stone. And he agreed! So I am excited to be on this new drug and tackle my drinking problem and control any seizures I may have.

hart, I am sorry to hear about the seizures - they sound so frightening. Sounds like something good may be coming of it though, and that is fabulous!! I hope this is your way out.

Hart,

I am livid with your last doctor. My doctor won't give me Wellbrutin because I am on anti-seizure meds without any history of seizure. She says it will put me at risk of a seizure.

Grrrr..

I do hope the Topamax helps, with seizures and drinking.

Hart - I am so sorry about the seizures and also your recent losses - how sad for you and very difficult. The Topamax works for me if that is any motivation or help. There is a thread in the meds section called New here and starting Topa with a question in which lots of questions about Topa are answered - there are a few of us on the thread although only two of us are currently on Topa. And it works for both of us. Are you going to take it per the titration schedule in RJ's book? PM me if you want to or have any questions.....

Thanx for all your support. Sorry you have been going thru something similar gg. The plan is for me to take 2 dilantin and one Topa for two weeks, then take 2 dilantin and two Topa for another two weeks. Then see my neurologist wherein I will be totally off Dilantin then we will see if the Topa dosage will be adjusted.

I told Joe if he wants to drink that's up to him but don't buy me any. I'm hoping he too will stop but I don't know and can't make him.

I am so proud of you Hart! You sound more determined than I have ever seen you to be before. You are right, getting sober is not commonly a team sport. Joe will have to make his own decisions on this one. But, I bet, by your example, he too will make some good choices.

Well Ruby he only drinks at home so no I can't do that. He doesn't want me to drink more than he usually wants to drink himself-I have no off switch a lot of the time, that might be motivation enuf for him to stop.
