Because i'm nosey???
So what are you guys getting from your spouse?
Like I said earlier, a remote control gate here. My birthday is the week after Christmas also, and I usually end up with a pile of bills then! Not this year though....
If we don't have the cash...........we don't buy it.
Not a bad goal as we have worked through the credit card days and we don't like the feeling of having to pay them after the new has worn off the "toy"!

Great idea Macks! I would say you went above and beyond the call of duty this past week!
I am doing one of the silly things I started a couple years ago. He really liked it and it spreads it out over the year. Once a month, the fourth Saturday or Sunday of the month, I make him the six course meal of his choice. (Basically stole the idea from Harry David's fruit of the month. Awesome gift PP!) He does not scrimp on what he asked for but I love to cook especially for a grateful eater! Some of the main dishes he chose last year, Beef Wellington, Chinese Imperial Shrimp, Veal Tarragon with Madeira wine sauce. . . Moussaka you get the picture. He loves homemade pies and /or creme brulee those topped his lists last year. Getting him some New Balance running shoes looks like he could use them. He is planning a home theater, I am painting and doing the window treatment to that. . . after the holidays!! Boxed set of The Godfather, movies because according to him, you can never have too much Godfather!
Well, I know my gift giving is lame in exchange for what he does for me . . . he loves to buy me diamonds. He has excellent taste buds in that department. Since our anniversary, Hannakuh, Christmas and my birthday are all in December, he usually adds a couple of those gift days together and outdoes himself. I am pretty sure that is what is up this year as one of my necklaces is missing and the jeweler who is my client, told me yesterday to have my husband call her husband. OK, that's not a dead give away!
Nancy I totally hear you on bills. I am at a couple hundred dollars with him for December. If I spread the rest of it out, I don't feel so stressed so doing the painting and window treatment along with the meals later makes it easier for me.

MKR, that is such a thoughtful gift. SIX COURSES???!!!! And I thought I was a good cook. I have a feeling we should be exchanging recipes. I may consider doing that for my hubby for his birthday. Awesome.I'm really easy to get along with once people learn to worship me

Hey Lush, I would love to exchange recipes at some point. I am sure you are an excellent chef!
It all started with him saying to me "PIE, I love pies, you don't make me pies anymore. You use to cook for me all the time before we were married." OK, he totally guilted me into hearing him! If you have a grateful eater, they love this stuff!
Six course in Chinese looks a bit different than French, Greek, Italian, they have feasts with 12 courses. Don't have that kind of time.

Looks like all the husbands are cooks/eaters! I'm getting mine poultry shears this year and two books (that won't be coming til February!). Think I'll stop at the local bookstore and see what's cooking in the cooking books (Mario Batali is always a fave.) That and a new, long overdue, bathrobe. We do it really small for each of us then splurge on a feast... oysters, lobster, a beautiful bottle of white, more oysters. Around here it's all about the food. Christmas Eve we'll make raviolis for the year, haven't decided on Christmas day's dinner as we did Prime Rib for Thanksgiving. Sigh, then settle in with a good book to digest, ha!
I'm really getting a kick out of buying for my four-year old daughter this year... Barbie dollhouse, stocking fun things, etc. Seems it's all about the kids for me. They're just so into it. She's manically humming Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer. A friend gave me a great tip... when she starts acting up I just hum "better watch out, better not cry" and man does she do a total turnabout! I know, kinda mean....

Knives. That's a gift that says I love you and trust you completely! Actually, there are some knives I would like.....
This year I procured a personal DVD player for husband as he travels a lot and now will be able to watch a movie on the plane. An autographed baseball, some Philadelphia Eagles stuff. That's it here.Hawk

Hi Mack....Big balls eh!!! That would take some beating, tell me, are they shiny or chocolate coated?? (re: lushes post on page one...Lush...just how close are you to M and L that you know a fact like this....sorry, I think voyeurism is gonna be my new hobby???????)
Aaaanyway, I got him a day racing grand prix cars around an official track!!! (will not be getting into the car with him for at least a week after the event until the 'throb and race hormones' have worked their way out of his system) and am also getting him an hours full body massage as he is always bangin' on about aches and pains!!
The only time The Bald (yes, he has problems finding enough keratin to make a hairstyle) has got me a gift without any prompting from the daughter...it was
a) a kettle
b) two knives (not even good ones...just the sort that I call Uri Gellars as they bend when you try to cut jello)....and
c) a set of skewers so I could make nicer kebabs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was chuffed to bits with himself, and truly had difficulty comprehending my lack of enthusiasm....we agree now that I surprise myself with something........

Sorry Macks ...
... can't do the Spouse thing BUT ... I'm really going to piss off the nephew and niece this year. I'm sick of buying plastic, sick of having kids tear my hand-made paper off presents, sick of the whole commercial thing.
So ... what I've done is .... I've bought a goat and a pig ... for use by someone in Africa who might need it. So, the nephew and niece effectively get nothing this Christmas ... but hopefully Oxfam will use my specific donation in an appropriate manner. And hopefully the niece and nephew will understand that it's more than just "about me". I hope they will open their hearts and their developing minds.
What a lovely thread you've started. Thank you.

That's what we've done the last couple of years...We bought animals from Heifer.org. We choose the animal, and they give the animal to a family in a village, but most importantly, they train the family (usually the WOMEN) how to care for the animal and subsequent babies, the by-products (wool, milk, etc.) and then how to trade products for other services/goods. Also, if there are babies available, these are given to others in the village to do the same. The original women then train the second level, and so on. Very empowering, and feeds and clothes families. It just makes us feel good. So much better than some "thing" bought at the mall because we had to buy something for someone just cause it was Christmas time. I always want to go and visit the communities we've contributed to (anonymously, of course).
