KTAB - this is most interesting as there is a shit-fight developing in Govt over the CHCH re-build. (which is now expected to take twenty years) Minister of Immigration wants to bring international workers in, but they can only get work permits, not residency or citizenshiop. Minister of Social Development want people on unemployment benefit re-trained to do the re-build. We will have an election before it all gets decided, but my bets are on a very messy immigration policy.

We are very open to immigration with more than quarter of the workforce has not been born in NZ. I love the diversity of our population, but we are not very good at providing secure employment for immigrants. We are really good at brining in skilled workers and then leaving them to only be able to work in low-skilled and low-paid jobs. And despite the fact that skilled tradespeople are desperately needed, the boyfriend of one of the young women in our office who is a registered Builder had his application for a "work to residency" permit turned down last week.

And in the mean time, wages in Oz are about a third higher than here. So as soon as they can, people head across the Tasman.

Having said that, we welcome the Irish with outstretched arms!!! And I'm certainly noticing more of them about!!

KTAB - just looked again at the salary quotes in the article. They are way in excess of what is paid here! (although costs of living are also much lowerI suspect)

Missy B that sounds like trouble down the track a brewing. A relative of mine and his gf went over about 18 months ago. They are both skilled professionals but it still took them quite a while to get sorted.

edit re rates offered, they would be considered decent here now but not a few years ago when costs rose hugely during the boom and some labourers were turning down work and asking crazy money, 1k euros a day not unheard of. Basic greed and look where it got us.

KTAB I think you are very right about trouble brewing. The current govt is way out in front in the polls, but there is lots of stuff happening in the background that many people are very concerned about. Its pretty much a question of whether it implodes before the election in NOvember, or shortly thereafter. However, I would have to say that the economy is basically pretty sound. The arguments here are mostly about the extent to which economic growth should be held up as the be all and end all. But then again I largely mix in left-wing circles, so I don't get to hear the full spectrum of debate!!

Your comments about greed are very apt. Sometimes I wonder whether having remained a low wage economy might in fact be a good thing for us in the end. But then I'm not an economist either.

OK - off to watch a trashy DVD!!

                    G'day KT,

I haven't been for a ride for awhile, as the weather has been a bit iffy, and i don't ride to work because it's a freeway most of the journey, and i need a new front end before i ride at those speeds consistently. The old girl might fall apart! But been busy and important in my spare time making music and other ventures, so bike has taken a back seat, but that's no excuse. Spring is coming so will fire her up again very soon. Have you been riding? I think i recall you saying a couple of your bikes are running and ridable? Hope you're well mate.

I actually hired a couple of cleaners the other week, and i could get used to that idea!

Have a marvellous evening everyone. :h

Yep, Seri sounds correct to me, as in the plural of crumpet is crumpi. Geez, those were the days......
