I'm a little drunk and probably will not remember this post tomorrow. Oh, for the topic? I remember checking out the "Big Book" when I was a teenager. I haven't got better. I'ved tried every med listed on this site ( and yes, that would include baclofen) but I have not walked into an AA room. Maybe it is time.

Do We Ever Get Better
This is a topic from the "Help" section. I've been here since 2007. I'm not really better. I'm more cognizant of my drinking, though. I leave book club/supper club right on time (9pm) so I can come home and finish by buzz. I'm sure my friends notice that when the bottles are empty I need to leave. I mean for fuck sake-let's pay the fucking bill so i can go home and drink.

Do We Ever Get Better
Shelby, your post is a walk down memory lane for me too. I was always jonesing to get home from things so the REAL drinking could start. In the end, I rarely even went to any activities outside my home because all I wanted to do was drink where I didn't have to worry about what other people thought of it, or how drunk I got. For me, all the "awareness" in the world couldn't change it. Once I have the first drink it's "game on" and I want to keep going until I pass out.
I don't live like that any more, thank goodness. And if I can stop and all these other people around here can stop then I believe you can stop too.
As KTAB said, there is no harm in going to a few AA meetings to see what it's like. I started going a few years ago. My favorite part is having face to face support with others who are "just like me." Each meeting group is different, so for anyone who is considering going, I always suggest going to a few different meetings before making a decision.
Never give up. If that doesn't work, try something else. No sobriety program can be worse than an alcoholic death would be.

Do We Ever Get Better
Things will get better if you quit drinking. Things will never improve if you keep drinking. (now things will still get better if you mod but only if its successful). I joined this site around 2009 and it took me some tries to get it right but things for me are getting better.I quit drinking on March 8, 2020. Taking it One Day At A Time and no more taking my quit for granted.
Also doing it for me. I got to stay sober for me.
Just consecrate on today and do what you can to remain sober for today and worry about staying sober tomorrow, tomorrow.

Do We Ever Get Better
Hi Shelby, I don't think we are ever 'cured' of this part of our being. What I think happens is we make choices about how we want to live our lives and work hard at staying sober - if that is our goal. For me, this will always, always be a part of what makes ME, but I choose not to live the life I was living about 7 years ago. Some days are diamonds and some days are stones, but I'm absolutely resolved that I'll never go back to where I was. I'd usually take a bottle with me when I went out in a group just so that I never got into a panic about not having enough to drink! I'd slip off the loo and gulp down as much cheap wine as I could and rejoin the event. Big handbags were SO handy!!! I'd be at a fancy do, all frocked up with the equivalent to any army bag draped over my shoulder full of booze! What the??? Anyway, we all have our stories and our questions and our hopes. All the best, Amanda. It is not what we do, but how much love we put into the doing.
