Home made beetroot is to die for, much better even than the tinned variety, my beautifull mother in law always made home made beetroot, not sweet, just right - she used to cook the beetroot - cool it, peel it, add vinegar and Voila - perfect!! Go with the Froglet's fried egg - an absolute essential must, as is the friend onion and (for me) LOADS of shredded cheese!! And correct me if I'm wrong Tawn but isn't "dead horse" just tomato sauce?? Oh Stirly are you in for a treat - heaven let me tell ya. Kaza xxKaza, we do beetroot salad like that here with the exception that we put EVOO on it as well as the vinegar and then mix in some fresh grated garlic and some dried oregano. It's actually one of my favourite salads and goes wonderfully with fried, battered fish and a garlic potato mash called scordalia. This is a basic recipe. You can adapt it to your own proportions as far as the potatoes go and just add the rest of the ingredients according to your own taste as to how strong you want it - the garlic and vinegar part I mean. I expect a spurtle would be just the thing to make this with.

1 1/2 pounds of potatoes for boiling
6-12 cloves of garlic, minced or grated (to taste)
1 cup of extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup of good quality red wine vinegar
      1 tablespoon of salt

Can't you just boil a couple and slice them?

      NOOOOO! okay

And is roasted beetroot very different in taste from tinned beetroot?

      YESSSSS! I understand

And do you really put a fried egg on it.

      YESSSS! Whatever you say Tawny.

And, and, and "dead horse"? How strong is the sauce that you use anyway.

Plain old tomato sauce or ketchup as it's also known in some parts of the world.Thank dawg. I was a little worried there...

Interestingly, some of the best burgers I've eaten were made by Greeks! :h I'm not surprised.inkele:

FFS ... can we stop faffing around about the G-bloke now? He's a big boy and he's right. Right?

I heard today that Rick Stein has re-married. Living in Oz. Has a new baby daughter. Called Phyllis.

Until Mr.G comes back to report on the lives of celebs, i can't confirm whether the above is true.

waxed AND threaded? Jeez you're a sucker for punishment!!!! I had my eyebrows threaded in Egypt once and I had swollen eyelids for about 24 hours :H:H The bloke I was with at the time had his beard and moustache threaded and he reckoned it was the most painful experience he had had in his life :H:H But you have inspired me to go and have a look at massages etc for next week - I will have to go into the local town on Tuesday as Mr B has to fly to Ak for a half day and I will hang around in the town having a spa, drinking coffees and ..... and ..... maybe see if there is anything else to do

Mr G has a huge amount of self containment and resilience. He'll be doing whatever he needs to do for himself. Hope you are giving hugs to self with those great biceps G.

And my favourite way of cooking beetroot is to boil, peel, and then slice or dice and mix with sour cream/creme fraiche and toasted dill seeds. And I like my burgers simple - beetroot, lamb patties, tomato and lettuce. No sauce.

Greek (and Turkish) burgers are better because they use lamb instead of beef!!

I seem to recall us having the beetroot conversation about this time last year. Is it a seasonal thing?????

TF - had coffee today with a friend with 14 chooks, who was complaining about too many eggs. I wisely suggested lemon curd and pavlova. She thought I was a domestic goddess

I'm not too sure about ketchup and/or mustard with beetroot. Have to give it a try and see. I guess a whole nation, with a few exceptions, can't be wrong tho'.

Oh, I love lamb burgers. Don't find them often here tho' TBH. Lamb is twice the price of pork so they usually use a beef and pork combo.
