THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

    AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ:

KICK THE DRINK BY JASON VALE

SERIOUSLY, EVERYONE - THIS BOOK DID IT FOR ME. DO YOURSELF THE BIGGEST FAVOR OF YOUR LIFE AND READ IT -- ALONG THE LINES OF ALLEN CARR, BUT BETTER. I'VE READ COUNTLESS BOOKS ON ALCOHOL AND ADDICTION, BUT THIS IS THE ONE THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE FOR ME.

THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Unwasted, What a coincidence! I just got the Jason Vale book and started reading it. I got to page 56 and decided to log on MWO, saw your post first and wondered "could they possibly be talking about the same book that I just put down" and it is. I decided to get this book because Easy Way by Allen Carr wasn't quite hitting home for me, although I really liked the message. I decided I needed something to boost Allen Carr's message, I even posted about that this morning.

The message is different than Easy Way, but he does add more. So far in the book I like how he drives the point home about alcohol being a drug just like heroin and crack and that we have been brainwashed into thinking it's some kind of pleasure or stress reliever instead. It is the only drug, however, that you have to justify not taking and almost feel embarassed to admit if you are a teetotaler. If you get to the point that you think you may drink too much and need to do something about it, you are automatically labeled an alcoholic. So instead of admitting anything, you try to "control it". That in itself is misery. These are the points that I think aren't as clear in Easy Way.

I'm only up to page 56, but am so glad I got this to supplement the Allen Carr book. I will keep you posted as I read. Let us know your progress with it. I believe in the power of coincidence...maybe it is a true sign that you brought up this book when you did. Thanks

LFP, be sure to read the entire book. Something just snapped for me, truly. I am absolutely certain that this book has given me what I need to stop drinking. I hope it does the same for you.

I too believe in coincidence/karma. I am not religious but feel about this book as I would imagine religious people feel when they say that god communicated with them on some level - or that submitting to their higher power is what gave them sobriety. That's what this feels like for me.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am a big reader and I feel like I've read just about EVERY book on alcoholism. I hope it's on Nook...

Dang, not on Nook, but I was able to order it used from B&N for 10.86, so my immediate-gratification personality will have to wait 3-5 business days.

            Thanks again.

I will check this book out too. I have also been helped along the way by reading the book "Dry," by Augusten Burroughs, and "Drinking: A Love Story" by Caroline Knapp. It has been helpful to me to read about other's struggles, and eventual triumphs when it comes to AL.

                  Dear Unwasted,

Thank you, I will get it on my Kindle!

Have you read Unwasted: My Lush Sobriety by Sacha Scoblic? Funny coincidence with your name! It's really really great; I had posted about it last week but wanted to mention it again. Can't wait to get the Vale book!

CW, no I haven't read that one, but I'll get it. I've read another Unwasted, which is my "namesake." I think it was by Mayra Hornbacher, but I've read so many that I'm not 100% sure. I'll get the book you've mentioned here too. Although, I have to say that I don't think I "need" to read more. But, I love reading the stories regardless.

Abielle - I've read both Dry and Drinking a Love Story - loved them both. Kick the Drink is more of a how to rethink the way you view alcohol.

Daisy, I hope it resonates with you.

GG - I'm not familiar with Nook - you sound like me. If I want something I have to have it NOW - LOL -- that's why I love Kindle - true instant gratification!

I will look forward to hearing your responses.

LOL, Unwasted, Nook is the Barnes and Noble version of the Kindle. It's an e-reader, but the book wasn't available on Nook (so sad.) I'm going to check if Unwasted is on there to fill my time until my book shows up in the mail.

I am such an immediate gratification "I NEED IT NOW!" personality, hence my lowered resistance to alcohol. If I want it, I have it and I don't work through it. I have so far today though...day 2 DONE!

GG - ok, that makes sense about the Nook - never knew the name but knew B&N had an e-reader. Good to know.

Miss B - I agree about the juicing recipes. If you didn't watch the video, there's one he shows how to do called the Brazillian, which looks really good -- different from the typical juicing recipes I've seen.

And just FYI to all - unlike many of the books on alcohol that are based on the 12 steps, Kick the Drink is NOT - totally different take (which works for my brain)!

THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Salient Points from Kick the Drink

I posted this for Looking for Peace who had asked what parts of the book resonated with me. I wanted to post here too in case anyone is reading/thinking of reading it:

One: don't think about moderating, because if one drink sounds pleasureable to you, so will a thousand. If you cut down, that just makes you believe that alcohol is even more precious than you thought, which makes you even more hooked because the hook is mental, not physical.

The craving only starts if you think you're missing out on a genuine pleasure (and for all the reasons he reiterates throughout the book, when we really look at it, we can see that alcohol is not really pleasureable).

Another point was - the drug alcohol never changes, only our perspective of it. The constant thinking about if we're going to drink tonight, drinking, recovering the next day - how it's such a roller coaster. The only true freedom is to completely stop. Otherwise, alcohol is controlling us - we are NEVER in control.

Another point - (and I have always thought this). We may look at others and think they have their shit together about drinking. But they really are possibly all struggling. People don't talk about it. But, by the very nature of alcohol one wants more and more because it's a drug. Don't envy other drinkers ever! They may not even know it yet, but if they keep drinking, over time, they are going to have a problem because alcohol is a drug. And the nature of any drug is that you need more and more of it to achieve the same result.

I also like this acronym he suggests we think about: CANT - whenever you feel deprived because you can't have a drink (which I don't because I am free)...think about the C - Constant A - and N - Never ending T - Torture that alcohol addiction is. You can be free from the Daily Mental and Physical Slavery of Being a Drug Addict
                            !

Another good point: Drinking sets off a chain reaction that will last for the rest of your life unless you break it.

Another point: Cured means making absolutely certain that whatever happens, you never have just one because you re-create the disease.
