THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

@UW, San Diego is a fabulous place. My brother lives there, and his 13-y-o son loves it. They live in the La Jolla -- Scripps Ranch neighborhood. Carlsbad is nice, too. Up near LA, some less expensive areas are Long Beach-San Pedro, and north of LA the towns in the Ventura area, including Port Hueneme and Oxnard. One area I love is Westlake Village. There is a mobile home park there where all the MHs have been converted into houses. It's quite inexpensive and lovely, and it's where they filmed Robin Hood in 1938.

And yes, that's the land lease. Believe it or not, there's also a highrise condo here in the Marina that has the same issue.

Sounds so exotic from the Costa del Mersey. Just looking out over a lovely sunset seeing the Liver buildings. Ferry across the Mersey just moving off. Oh and a sober Saturday:h

I'm not familiar with San Diego really, although my dad grew up there, and he loved it...being your typical surfer boy. The parts of California I know really well are Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Camarillo, Calabasas, Santa Barbara, Solvang. I lived and worked in Thousand Oaks and Camarillo for 10 years. It's a very nice area, but very expensive. It's about 12 miles from Malibu Beach, I used to go there all the time. That's the area a lot of movie stars live in, so of course that drives up the price. Now I'm in a smaller town within Santa Barbara County, and it's not as pretentious, so it's much cheaper. Of course the kids think it's "boring", but I lived the Los Angeles life style...so I'm happy with boring! :H I don't know if you're familiar with Solvang, but you may want to visit when you come out, it's such a cute little dutch town. I wouldn't recommend living there (expensive and not much to do), but it's fun to visit for a day or two! And be warned, this is the heart of "Wine Country"...so don't tempt yourself unnecessarily (I'm sure you'll be fine). I was never a wine drinker, thank goodness! Oh, another fun thing to mention is that about 3 years ago at our local High School Football game guess who was there? Will Smith and his whole family. His oldest son was on the rival football team. Of course that made the front page of our little local paper! And I have to say, he was SO NICE, he took the time to pose for pictures and sign autographs for the kids. He seemed really down to earth .

But back ON topic for a quick sec :H

I am on page 162 of Vale's book and I absolutely love it. There was one sentence that stopped me dead in my tracks. It pointed out that when we go "unconscious" after too much alcohol it's because our body can't keep us AWAKE and ALIVE at the same time...how sad is that? Our body has to choose, because we've poisoned it SOOO much, so in order for it to save us, we have to go unconscious. The abuse we put ourselves through, right? And our poor body just wants to live. YIKES.
And I'm enjoying my hangover-free morning coffee with NO cigarettes...day 6 on that!

          Hope everyone else is well.

OH, wow, thanks K9 and Crimsons - this is great info on California. OK, it seems no one minds too much if I throw in questions, so I'll just keep doing so periodically. Let me know if I get too obnoxious!

I'm really glad to hear your opinions about San Diego - I can get nonstop flights there, which is a big deal to me -- makes traveling so much less hassle!

K9 - you're reminding me of some good parts of the book - I also had never thought of exactly what alcohol was doing when I'd "pass out" -- isn't it amazing that we really never question what it's doing? Anyway, I'm glad you're finding it helpful! And good for you on your af days!! So nice to feel healthy - the cigs are probably even worse for you than the al, so good on that too.

Tips - hi - keep meaning to say hello on your blog but I've been super busy at work. I have to tell you that I've decided not to get a tattoo. I just keep looking at my nice skin and thinking that I don't want to do anything to it that I can never change - I guess I'm a chicken. Did you go today? I think this was your day!! Let us know.

Hi Anon! How's it going with you? Hope all is well - I know you hit a rough spot not long ago, but guessing you're good now?

            Have a super day everyone!

THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Doing great here. Here's something a little uncanny. As my Dad is in serious medical trouble and I am on vigil at my sister's place in Toronto, I gave myself permission to drink her homeade wine and whatever else I wanted. I know call me weak. Anyways, I just don't want it. I understand how people with no alcohol dependency can just say no and really mean it. In other words; I have no rules about drinking any more. I just don't feel like it. Since i read JV's book, my cravings for alcohol have mostly disappeared. i have really been enjoying her assortment of herbal teas and the wine smells awful. It's 9:30 a.m on Sunday and the whole family is in bed (nursing hangovers I presume) and I am up and at it. LOL...

I do this for my children, my grandchildren, my health, my peace of mind, and mostly for the opportunity to learn to live with my true, unfiltered, clear-headed, vulnerable self.

Tips, way to go, girl. You sound like you're doing really well! I am sorry, though, to hear about your dad. My dad is 89 and not doing real well either so I can totally relate. Best to you!

THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

So sorry to hear about your dad Tipp. It's tough having aging parents but it's great you don't need alcohol to get you through the rough times.

I'm so glad to hear about all of the positive comments people have about the book. Keep posting.

I have been really ill for over a week with the worst cold I have ever had. It keeps morphing from sore throat to stuffy nose to coughing to plugged to up ears daily. I haven't gone anywhere. I haven't drank, but honestly I don't know how much of not having a desire to drink is because of this cold. I feel like I just don't want to drink because I am sick. I'll have to see what I really feel after I get better.

My next question to everybody on this thread is... What about those of you who have NOT had this message work for you? What fell short? Do you think it's the timing? It seems like most of the posters have had this book "click " with them. I just want input from the other side. I think the input so far has been so helpful, I'd like to hear about more of the struggles and frustrations. Thanks, Peace

PS. It was very helpful for me when Tipp quoted and actual page number when referring to your body shutting down. Referring back to the page was a great idea. Thanks, Tipp

THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

                          Hey Everyone-
I've become a regular contributor on Daily Ab, but Unwasted caught my attention a couple weeks ago with all the hype about Kick The Drink. To be honest with you (no offense UW), I thought maybe you were a marketer for Jason Vale. Everything you said screamed "Buy The Book". But the more I saw people commenting on it, the more my curiosity was peaked. So I ordered it and began reading it last week. It's VERY intriguing! I agree that it has a lot of things we already knew about alcohol, but his repetitive writing helps to stick it to our brains a lil' more. I've taken his advise early on in the Preface to commit to reading at least a chapter a day. Being that I have ADHD, this is a big accomplishment for me. I can't tell you how many books I have started without finishing. And of course, having 3 small children doesn't make it easier. However, taking alcohol out of the nightly mix creates MUCH more reading time. So thanks Unwasted for recommending this book & thanks to all of you that have posted comments on it. Sometime in the last week, I read about the first 15-17 pages of posts. Now, I'm trying to catch up with the rest of them. I'll gradually fit those in over the next few days, as I'm going to go get another chapter under my belt. Looking forward to sharing comments with you all. :-)

Go Away Cabernet, I got a chuckle out of your thinking that I was marketing a book. That's funny - so, just a disclaimer to confirm that I have absolutely no connection to him. I had never heard of him - just stumbled upon the book and wanted to help others by getting it out there. And, I've posted before, I don't think it's a magic bullet - more of another tool that helps put alcohol in perspective. Hope it helps you too!

THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Finally got the book, it took almost 2 weeks to ship to me! But, I have it now. I have begun reading it, but haven't had a lot of time to do so. I am really trying to absorb the ideas...and am hoping to incorporate them into my way of thinking. I have been invited to go out dancing with my girlfriends this weekend...at a bar...where ALL will be drinking. I will be the only AF one. I do not feel strong enough to do so and remain sober, but I also do not want AL to have that sort of control over me. I want to be able to see friends i haven't seen in months, without the stress of AL. Sigh.

SERIOUSLY, EVERYONE - THIS BOOK DID IT FOR ME. DO YOURSELF THE BIGGEST FAVOR OF YOUR LIFE AND READ IT -- ALONG THE LINES OF ALLEN CARR, BUT BETTER. I'VE READ COUNTLESS BOOKS ON ALCOHOL AND ADDICTION, BUT THIS IS THE ONE THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE FOR ME.
                                order placed, thank you

I liked Allen Carr's book smoking wise (although I quit smoking a few years later 'without it', so to speak) so I'll take a punt here.
