Morning Tips & Anon. Think I need to keep busier here in the army, its been a rough couple of weeks with my usual stress reliever coming to the fore. I am starting to think alcoholism is a mental illness, God knows its a form of madness to keep drinking when everything else screams ENOUGH at us. I have no other explanation. Not that I am trying to abdicate responsibility, for nobody else puts that first glass to our lips but us. Anyway how has everyone been, sorry I havent read the thread properly for a while.Ethanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?

I have found the more times I have slipped back the more strategies I have learned to fight this condition. Main one is to not look back with regret just forward with hope.

Good morning Tippers, Whizzy, KTabbers and all those yet to drop by.
I've long thought that alcoholism is highly connected with mental illness and both the doctors that have treated me over the years agree. Getting sober and staying sober is only the beginning. It's the unravelling of the brain that can knock you sideways.
Oh and BTW I've developed a stinking cold so can I have hugs, a big mug of tea, some paper hankies and some there, theres, never minds. It could be worse, I could be filing.

KTAB;1195551 wrote: Thanks Anon, I know you are right. Then there is the question of depression, do we get depressed and then we drink or is it the drink that makes us depressed. Bit of both I think probably.
Anyway off for a run.
Tabbers does getting out with the dogs and walking on the beach lift your mood?

Hiya Army :hallo:
Tabbers: from the Allen Carr course I attended to quit the fags, it came to me again that we can only leave these addictions behind us when we realise, accept and fully embrace the fact that there is nothing to be gained out of (over)eating / smoking / drinking / drugs. THere just really isn't any point to these things.
Easy to glibly say things like that, but infinitely more difficult to get it to truly "click" in our minds on a fundamental level. But once it does, it really does become easy.I'll do whatever it takes

:hallo:JackieC, Mrs. A., Tipster and KTABbers.
Jackie - sorry to hear you've got a cold. Pat, pat, there, there and a big :huggy Hope you get over it soon. There's something I've seen mentioned on the boards - echinacea - I've never tried it but here's a link. Chicken soup is good too, especially if you put lemon juice in it. Link - http://nccam.nih.gov/health/echinacea/
Mrs. A - I wonder if maybe you should give yourself an extra day before running. After all, a general anesthetic is more difficult than we realize on our system.
KTAB - what can I say? I know you've been through an awful lot lately what with your Dad's surgery and your wife's Uncle dying. Plus you lost a customer recently if I remember well. With the economic situation today, I think it's correct to say that we can't expect any improvement in the foreseeable future. So there are going to be more difficult times ahead of us. All I can say is that we have to do the best we can to face those difficulties and get through them in whatever way we can. I've got no answers or advice, I guess we just have to keep plodding ahead and not let things like AL and the inevitable depression and self-disappointment that follow, pull us even further down than we already are. I think that sticking close to here helps all of us. As I posted recently, being on the boards at MWO, posting and reading, helps us feel that we are not so alone in battling the AL monster. And yes, getting out and walking with the dogs should be your priority in the morning, no matter what the weather. It does raise our spirits and makes a wonderful start to the day. Whatever makes you feel good is what you need to do to get back into the swing of things.
Love your post, Tipster. "Nothing to be gained." That's what we have to concentrate on.For every 60 seconds that you are angry, you lose a minute of happiness.

Tips you never sound arsey holey as you so eloquently put it, I know any advice I get here is meant with the right intentions no matter what and it is always taken that way, be it pats on the head or kicks up the rear end. So fear not and say it like it is.
Stirly I do take dogs out but for as long as is good for me I believe so I will take your advice.
I dunno I know all the right things to do and I know what keeps me on the straight and narrow but I just become complacent and somewhat lazy I think. Using AL as a crutch for 25 years+ is a very ingrained habit and always lurking beneath the surface. I see it as a defect in character not to be able to stay changed in my ways for any length of time. But you know only one person can change that, no pain, no gain.Ethanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?
