Well Rubes, sounds like you know the breed and the responsibilities that lay with them, so again no offense was meant just glad that you understand the power of these dogs. I am glad that your experience has always been good but there are in fact some
that have been shockingly disappointed by their behavior. Best wishes. Gina:l

Stats are for sheep. It's the owners not the stats that make a good pet. I've met TMB--she did not harm or scare me. Do beware if you are guilty tho.

Good morning, dear friends. Guess where I am??? I am in Jackson, Mississippi with our sweet friend Vicki. Yep..I flew down here yesterday to surprise her for her 50th birthday party. She was so shocked.....her daughter picked me up at the airport and took me to the hotel....then her parents & sister picked me up and we went to Sharla's house....I went in last...rang doorbell and they had Vicki answer the door.....she just stood there and didn't say anything....the look on her face was priceless. Finally, she screamed....Kelly is that you......am I dreaming????? She hugged me at least 20 times.......before she even let me in the house......I think Paul has it on video and Vicki will share it with all of you. We are together in a very nice hotel and everything is close around here...the airport is only 10 minutes away...her daughter Sharla's house is 10 minutes away...her parents and sister are 5 minutes away....

Today we are going to her brother's deer camp which is 2000 acre on the Pearl River with sandbars and ride 4 wheelers and tonight we're having a bonfire and staying in her brother's cabin. I feel so at home here and everyone is treating me like family.

I hope you all have a beautiful day like I am and Vicki is doing so GREAT and taking care of herself and has a permanent smile on her beautiful face!!

G, I take no offense. Everyone has opinions, and I appreciate that. Mine won't change at the this last date in my life. I was walking in the yard with my then-2 y/o Tay when a neighbor's Akita came loping towards Tay. I was about 15' away, and wasn't alarmed, though surprised the dog was in my yard (later found neighbor's son was in the shop). My beloved Wolfie came out of nowhere, barrelling into the dog and chasing it out of sight down the drive. Shortly afterward, same scenario, it happened again. I spoke to my vet about it, and neither of us could reconcile this behavior with our gentle giant. About a week later, another neighbor was helping the dog's owner when he saw the dog coming towards him. At the last second he realized it was charging him, threw his arm across his throat. The attack was so severe 2 of the dog's teeth came out in the man's forearm, and he had to have 50 stitches. The neighbors made a lot of calls and no one would take such a dangerous dog, so they had to have him euthanised. If they had researched the dog's breed, they would have understood, could have taken precautions with socialization, training, to prevent this, but instead they let it roam free and un-neutered. Everyone agreed that in both my encounters with it an Tay, he was going after her, and I never realized it. But Wolfie did. I never saw him behave that way again, except with some drunk at the store who tried to open my back car door. The store owner was rolling on the floor laughing when I went in, said that guy had been scaring people all day but picked the wrong car!! :H
I have a T-shirt that reads 'The more I see of people, the better I love my dogs'. TMB is aging now, needs daily medical attention, whimpers like a baby lamb if I bump her (arthritis), but she can still become a rocket if something catches her attention. That's the wonder of dogs. I know Sun saw those sparks of the old Maggie at times, and I know how Rog loves his Pit Coco the barrel racer!
All dogs have specific, genetic traits. It's when we, humans, abuse those traits or encourage indescriminate, back-yard breeding for money. I can tell you almost every animal in my life, and there have been many, and our time together. I'm guilty of breeding one litter of AKC German Shepherds, after careful research for a sire and vetting the buyers. I'll never go through that again, too much like losing a child. A great breeder is one who makes you sign a no breeding contract, and also guarantees they will take the dog back at any time in it's life you never want it. I believe people should be licensed to own them. I boycott pet stores that sell animals, because people buy on a whim, when the animals are little and cute, without thought of the future. Recently there was an article about a pet store surrounded by bars that instituted the policy of NEVER selling to anyone who'd been drinking. One of our regular charities is a shelter near the cabin where I volunteer. Someone brought in a female Rottie (mix - though they adamantly claimed she was pure-blooded?) Have had numerous people see TMB and tell me they have a 'Rock-Wilder' they want to breed. Went to see one once. It was tall, gangly, more hound than anything, and I never did that again. AND he was on a chain, which I HATE!
Shelter dogs are always the best bet, I know. I've adopted many. But it's heart-breaking to see what people will do when they get a dog for status. Tink, Gator, Wolfie, Nick, Tessa, Meggie, Frito, Toby - so many others, have come through our life and I only hope we gave them as much as they gave us.
Didn't mean to run on, and again, I'm not offended. I love to take any opportunity to educate (not give my opinion!) people on the huge responsibilities entailed with pet ownership. My pets cost me a thousand a month, but what they give is priceless. So if we all look at what we really want, and what is good for the friend we're getting, and make the commitment required, any one of God's creatures we welcome in to our lives will leave us richer. TMB is puzzled, occasionally gives brief chase to the flying cats, loves Ninny and protects her from the coyotes and wild dogs here, her BFF is Tinker. The jury's still out on Roger, but Gator loved him and Sue. Rotties have an innate protective instinct. Over decades I've seen it. A good Rottie does not indiscriminently attack, but they watch, always. Did you know it's in their nature to charge a perceived intruder to within about 5 feet, hold them for instruction from their master? I've seen it happen, when the electric company sent out a young guy to walk our power line without telling us.) And I DO agree they are not for everyone. Too many end up in fighting pits. (Don't get me started on dog and cock fighting!).
So my day is well under way, and there will be 40 people here in 5 hours. Guess I should either get busy or abscond. Have a great weekend, all. Didn't mean to sound preachy, just give information I've collected over my LONG (shut up, Sun) experience with pets.
Oh, and if you're considering getting a cat, visit a shelter now. They're running over. I could have left Miss Sully and Pow, but they would have had a death sentence. Now, they are flying around my yard, confusing the dogs, sneaking in every chance, and fat and sassy. Ninny is so fat I don't know how her legs hold her up!! So, I guess it all works out. Now, anyone out there want an itchy, shedding, gassy, smelly, Jack Ass Russell Terrorist?? CHEAP, as in free. Call me, PLEASE!
