    Oh, mama...so sorry about your father-in-law! I am very familiar with that particular mix of seethe/fear. I wish our folks would accept their limitations, but there's not a lot we can do about that. :h I'm sending prayers his way.

      MB, I feel your pain. I think it's a lot to do with taking a man's autonomy away when they get to that age, and the feeling they can't do what normally would be such a simple thing. Hubs and I argue constantly about his almost 86 y/o father, with a heart condition and cataracts, driving like a bat outta hell day and night. But when the day comes he CAN'T drive, it will open a whole 'nother can of worms. I completely understand how you feel he's the heart of the family, so help him, cherish him, and try to let him keep his dignity intact as long as possible. I remember what happened with my Daddy, and it was almost as painful as actually losing him. Give him a hug and kiss from all your friends, and tell him we want him back well and happy as soon as possible, but no more climbing!

            Feds are pushing for a total ban on cellphone use while driving now, after a 19 y/o sent and received 11 messages seconds before plowing into stopped cars, killing himself and a young band student on a school bus, injuring 50 more children, and other fatal accidents involving them. I've seen studies that indicate using the cell and driving is at least as dangerous as drinking and driving.What do ya'll think? I drive through one of the busiest cities in the world, regularly, and about 1 out of 3 people are on their phones. I've watched the patterns, lots of times they are holding up traffic because they're talking, and in the 'fast' lane. Hubs and I have lectured our grands on this, and the response is something like 'but what if someone calls?'. Beck totalled her first car, a pristine used Camry, because she was on the phone. I post this because of the correlation between drinking and driving, and cell use and driving. I've been guilty of both in the past, but even this week have rummaged in my purse for a barking phone (Hub's idea of a funny ringtone). Unfortunately, the real damage cells do when driving usually only come out after some big fatal accident. I'm taking another vow today; no phone use unless I'm pulled over safely, and if necessary, I'll return the call. And I'll continue to badger my grands. I think our daughter is the worst, since she gets patient calls at all hours, but her children are in the car. Seems like we always think we're doing things safely, can't hurt anyone, till we do.
            Sorry for the :soapbox: just something I've been noticing for years. Had a young preppie woman in an SUV riding my bumper one day, car full of kids, talking on the phone, and I got ticked and hit my brakes. She stopped inches from me. Hubs took Mad's phone out of her hands the other day here after about 10 calls in a row, and turned it off. Then they all got a lecture on cell phone courtesy. Among other things, he told them NOT to talk on them in a restaurant (how often have you had the person in the booth behind you using the cellphone voice-loud), or when they're checking out of a store (stores are putting up signs now that say 'you will not be served if you're on a cellphone.') Done with my rant now, but I would like to know what your feelings are. But PLEASE don't tell me it's your 'right'!!! :H This doesn't seem like the area to 'fight the man'.

                Ruby - I get SO angry when someone is on their cell phone and they are at my register. I either talk OVER their conversation or else totally ignore them and just do their transaction. Both my girls, if they call me and get to the till, immediately hang up, saying they are at a checkout. It is SO rude!! One of my pet peeves. Also agree with no talking on the phone or texting while driving - I think it should be outlawed. It is on military bases and folk get fined for it. Some states don't allow it either.

                On a lighter note - and here I did ponder LONG and HARD about whether or not to post this because this will be REAL fuel for you Ruby - BUT, a customer asked me today, if I was a .......WAR BRIDE????? That means I would have had to come to America 10 years before I was actually born!!!!! I looked at him and told him I didn't like him any more. :H:H

                      Ruby--I am all for a total ban on cellphones while driving. It's been illegal in my state for years, but I always see people on the phone or texting while driving. It doesn't seem to make any difference that it's illegal. I'd like to actually see them enforce the ban. I bet about one third of the drivers would be off the road if it were truly enforced. And I can't stand it when someone is talking on their phone in the checkout line. I'll answer mine as I'm approaching the line only to tell the caller that I'll call back after I'm done. If I'm already being waited on I 'll ignore the call until after I'm done. How in the world did we all survive before we had cellphones? :nuts:

                      Sunshine--I'm so glad I don't work with the public. War bride? Makes you wonder what's going through some people's heads and why they think that their every thought must come out of their mouth!

                            Sun.......I'm a War Bride ! Ha! Been at war ever since I was married ! ha! I lived in Germany in my preteens (Dad was a soldier) I can remember a lot of the kids around the Army Post were acknowledged as War babies. I dated one.....real cutie. Tony
