    I want to stop drinking.

I found this board while looking up information on alcoholism. I want to announce to the world that I'm tired of alcohol being such a fundamental part of my life. Even if nobody responds, that's ok. I feel that this is at least a step in the right direction, and I feel better already by just typing these words.

I'm almost 27, and have been drinking heavily for 3 years. I'm an American guy that has been living in Japan for several years. I don't remember at what point drinking stopped being fun and started being normal, but it has. I feel proud and happy that I want to stop, and can see a better future ahead.

If anyone else out there is reading this and has struggled with alcohol... you're not alone. We can do this.

Thanks for the quick response Molly! Thank you for the kind and positive things you said. You don't know how much you and people like you are helping just by being here. Thank you!

WOW, what a GREAT response Molly! Pretty much sums up anything I could have said, but better.

I applaud your decision to kick AL to the curb, and to seek a place where you can get support and ideas, with people that have "been there, done that". Dont be afraid to jump in, post, read, just push all the buttons you want, you cant break anything!

I do recommend staying very hydrated in the beginning of your trials, I almost cant function now without a bottle of seltzer water. I know the doctor had me on some vitamins very early as well, I guess AL depletes the body of certain vitamins, they know more about that stuff than I do.

I wish you all the strength, wisdom, and support needed to reach your goals....and do set some goals for yourself.............How can you hit something, if you dont know what you are aiming at?

Here's the coveted(or so Id like to think) Nelso star of approval, many more to come when you start stringing days together, it wont be easy, but its worth it........GL brotha

Welcome Daneira, you definitely are a wise man. My son is your age and we had lunch today. He, too is struggling with alcohol abuse and I am just glad that he is talking about his issues. He's not ready to give it up just yet and is at the stage where he is trying to cut down. When he gets to your stage, I'll be happy for him. It's so hard to give up something that is socially expected. Kudos to you for recognizing this as a serious issue before a lifetime goes by and you have lost out on so much.

Search, post, read and stay close by. there are so many people with so much experience and lots of successful outcomes to encourage you.

        All the best.

I applaud you for making the right decision. One bit of advice from me is to gather a support group (both online like your doing and offline) and use your support group (or team if you prefer to call it your support team).
I quit drinking on March 8, 2020. Taking it One Day At A Time and no more taking my quit for granted.

Also doing it for me. I got to stay sober for me.

Just consecrate on today and do what you can to remain sober for today and worry about staying sober tomorrow, tomorrow.

You sound very similar to me OP. I'm 28 and living in Korea, I used to only drink 3 or 4 cans of beer on a Friday a few years ago now it's a bottle of wine or half a bottle of vodka.

That's the nature of alcohol, it creeps up on you. I quit drinking a week ago and so far it's going fine. The big hurdle is making the initial decision to stop drinking and overcoming any fear that may generate.

              Hi Dan, :welcome:

I read your post on the Newbies Nest and I wanted to say welcome aboard and keep posting. I am another one who wishes I had your wisdom at an earlier age. You are very wise to question your alcohol consumption...It really does take a strong person to see what a bad influence it has on our lives, when everything in today's world wants us to think it is not just okay, but expected.
