    Army Thread MONDAY 19th December

Only three more days till Christmas hols for me. Can't wait!!!
I had a quick read back of yesterday's thread. I hope all the seasonal blahs and illnesses get wiped away soon.:l Let's all keep checking in here. Hopefully by Thursday I'll have a bit more time . I just have to prepare myself for three more crazy days and then I can breath again. But I do always come on here and read back even if it's difficult during the day. The kids-even the dog!-are being very demanding.:H

A few kilometres outside Witsand on the way to Malgas, we spotted the local takeout. Unfortunately we had already had lunch.

Shortly thereafter, we came across two ostriches. The male was too far away to get a good picture (he appears in the background on the 2nd picture). The female making her appearance here must have a nest close by, because she wasn't very happy to see us.

The area we drove through is primarily sheep farming country, with some cattle and wheat also being produced. These pictures give you a sense of what it's like there.

We specifically chose to drive back through Malgas, because you cross the Breede River using the only hand-operated pontoon still in operation in South Africa.

It operates between sunrise and sunset daily. The cost is about 3 euro. Three men pull it across using chains they wrap around the ferry cable. It has been in operation since 1860 (I think).

It was on the road between Malgas and Swellendam that we had the flat tire. The eldest cub really did me proud - he was a huge help in getting the spare fitted and the car unpacked / repacked.

They can be very agressive, Starts - a kick from a fully grown male can literally kill.

They taste good, though you should see the drumsticks on them :H:H:H
