Aust lies approx between latitudes 12 degrees south and 40 degrees south (not counting Tassie... sorry Saph).

US lies approx 25 degrees north and 50 degrees north, so...

Australia is more or less 13 degrees closer to the equator than the US, so it is higher than the US in terms of spherical bottomness...
Qld. decided to stick to a single timezone as it is so extensive longitudinally and it would create havoc for one state to have both Eastern standard time , summer saving time and Central standard time.

Australia has 3 timezones: Eastern, Central and Western. But we also have Summer saving time in most states which creates a fourth time dimension, and fades your curtains.
