How long do Rotts tend to live, Rubes? So many of my friends have had pure-bred Great Danes, Rotts, etc. and they all seem to have issues, even when they come from good breeders. My sister is picky about breeds and had Shar-peis for years, most of whom died from kidney failure in a very short while. I'm just curious about the need for breed.

Fen, that's what I'm trying to avoid, people who inbreed them. I'm dedicated to the furthering in a good way of them, but the only way is to research back several generations of them. It's not about looks, massive size, it's their qualities of boundless devotion to a good master. Like so many other things, they have been polluted. I once went to a dog training class where a woman who was obviously uninformed brought in a Rottie I wanted to cry for; it had hip dysplasia so badly it could hardly walk, was thin, but she had such pride in owning a Rottweiler. Again, it's the not breeding for quality, but the money made from them. Any dog that is a mix is usually stronger, from the mix, because there is no breeding of parents to children, brother to sister, but that's what the people do who only look at them as dollar signs. I would never breed one now. Too many dogs need homes. I guess I'm at a point where I can afford the best, which first means the heritage with no traits of genetic disease. I've rescued and lost so many overbred Rotties, just to give them a good home for a while. There IS a right way to preserve the breed, but only if we continue to buy from dealers who have chosen them by studying the history of their ancestors. IMHO, the purity is like any endangered species, and breeding is crucial. I won't enrich an uninformed breeder, because it encourages them to keep doing it. In most situations, a mix is far better. But I know the Rottie breed, and hope like a race of people there can be a way to keep them pure in a form.
All large dogs have a shorter life expectancy. The Irish Wolfhound is the worst, only 6-8 years. But they are magnificant, devoted, protective dogs. In Germany they have a great system of keeping track of their Rotties, only allowing the best to be bred. Importing one from them is very difficult, and one of the flashing red signs I avoid is when someone says 'German Rottweiler'. It may be of German descent, but it's not German unless it was born there. I watched a court show once where a woman was sueing because her Shiz Tu was sold as T-cup, but was much bigger. The seller said 'well it would fit in a T-cup when I sold it. That's just ignorant. You only know about the size of the dog till they're well over 10 weeks, and then there are charts to tell you what size they will be.
Sorry to go on. It's hard to explain, since I've had so many dogs in my life, but again, I won't enrich a person who doesn't take the time to understand what they sell. And so many breeds have regular histories of congenital disorders. So if I just wanted a Rottie, I could find one from so many sites, but I'm looking for the one, and if I have to pay a lot, then it has to meet my criteria, and then I have to fall in love with it after a few minutes.

Hi all - I am in from work. I have STILL got my ironing to do as I didn't end up doing it last night, but also need to brush Ben first!! I will get going shortly! Hope you find the perfect Rottie Ruby - you will know her/him when you meet, I am sure. I think it is good that you are doing lots of research instead of just jumping in really. Glad that Berit (sp?) is doing well. How are her eyes?

I called Rog and had to leave a message so hopefully he will call back. I do hope that everything is okay with him - it isn't like him to be away this long unless there is something wrong.

Jan and Tony - hope you both have good birthdays on Sunday - and Jan - as you said, the Mortgage was paid so that is a present in itself!!

Well, I'm sorry for my editorial on dogs earlier, though I believe it true, and would encourage anyone looking for a pet to get a mix. Only a person seriously interested in a breed should look for one by the right parimeters. And never buy them to breed, unless you are dedicated to them. That's why I'm being so selective. There are just too many out there who need homes.I'm at the point of believing pets should be regulated.
Sun, MB, hope you get some rest. I've decided against even looking at those pups, since of course they'll be cute. But not at those prices. Another worry for me if I was the breeder.
Made Hubs a great Southern dinner of cornbread and an array of veggies. He reacted well when I told him I'd only be gone a few days, gave me a new credit card, and I crushed Tay's hopes of them taking our Roadster while I drove up in my DogMobile. Her memory is worse than mine, always slants toward what she wants.
Fen, those dog collars have to be far ranging, and hunting dogs will run for miles tracking a prey. The reason for the collars is because they tend to go so far in such a heat they can't find their way back. Another trait of a breed, I guess. And another reason they don't make great family pets, because they will disappear in an instant when unleashed. I guess ya'll can tell I've really studied dogs.
Sun, hope you get to talk to T. He deserves his privacy to find his way, but he has inspired so many more than me, we get concerned. He's a wonderful person, who's had a terrible time lately, and it takes a while sometimes to recover ourselves and our paths.

hey there folks .. well first would like to say I'm sorry that i haven't been around much .. but as they say life with all its ups and downs must go on ... and that's whats been going on everything is up side down and around and around ... that's all i want to say right now .. don't worry nothing to do with AL or me drinking ... just work and leact of and how things go from great to worst ...but i will survive .. and will the reason i haven't been posting is just that i don't really have much to say these days .. just that I'm doing my best to stay busy and under control of my life right now and yes i know i should be talking more about whats going on but i don't want to come across needy in anyway and this will past just takes time .. so just know that i love each and everyone of you and thank you for all loving support... im never that far and if you try calling my phone..it is messing up so if you need to talk please keep trying to call...

CORNBREAD! I forgot all about the cornbread. I must make some tomorrow !! need to find the recipe and add ingredients to my list. I am going to make a yummy carrot cake too - I have a recipe that has carrots, coconut, pineapple, walnuts and sultanas in it! It is so good. It makes two cakes so will take one into work on saturday.

Still haven't heard from Rog - I wish he would post even if it is a one liner just to let us know he is okay.........he has been so wonderful for so many here - maybe he needs some help?

Well, seeing as I am as far from Southern as you can possibly get - I DO need a recipe! LOL I have the one that Jan gave me - at least I think I do - I remember we halved it - or I think we did. I hope I wrote everything down halved - or else I am going to have a mess and NOT the delicious stuff that Jan cooked for us!

Back to what I was doing. just took a break.......
