    Army Thread Tuesday 20th March

daughter is, so far as I'm aware, about a child who is abused by her father without her mothers knowledge, i think the learning disability thing is that the child can't explain or understand whats happening. could be wrong but thats the interpretation i'd heard, may help to know the song was origianlly titled brother and featured slightly different lyrics but was later changed to daughter.

as with most pearl jam though, eddie might well ahve written in a double meaning intentionally, he does it way too much xD

EDIT: interestign looking at the song facts part, didn't see the one about it beign about disability specifically, thats a very interesting idea and makes sense, disabled kids used to suffer alot of abuse from family etc, cheers for sending that my way expat, obsessive pj fan here xD
I have faced it, a life wasted, and I am never going back there again

To ya'll my name is inchy. I am an alcoholic - and priority number one is making it to the end of this day AF. No excuses.

That's what I'm getting too-maybe a child who is abused and the mother won't listen. But as the link I posted says-there are quite a few takes on what the lyrics really mean. I like Pearl Jam too. But anyway-I'm fighting against abuse -mainly people misunderstanding "different children" in whatever way that may be. x

expat: my older brother died before I was born due to a genetic disorder whcih meant he had very severe problems, because of his problems my mum met people with kids who had a huge range of different disabilities and difficulties, it taught her alot and she passed that on to me, would never judge a kids behaviour without the whole story. wish everybody had the chance to get to know kids who are 'different' in some way and realise that actually alot of the time they are just fantastic people if you're willing to work with them instead of against them.

thanks JC, hoping this works out for the best

Somebody just told me to watch this Pearl Jam video. Trying to understand the lyrics-they say it's about dyslexia -others say not.
                These are the lyrics......
Alone, listless, breakfast table in an otherwise empty room
Young girl, violence, center of her own attention
The mother reads aloud child tries to understand it
                Tries to make her proud

The shades go down it's in her head
Painted room, can't deny there's something wrong

Don't call me daughter not fit to
The picture kept will remind me
Don't call me daughter not fit to
The picture kept will remind me

                Don't call me,
She holds the hand that holds her down
                She will, rise above

Don't call me daughter, not fit to
The picture kept will remind me

                http://youtu.be/Vgnl2WLF388[/video]]Pearl Jam - Daughter (Live) - YouTube

                This is what Wikipedia says....
                Vocalist Eddie Vedder about "Daughter":

The child in that song obviously has a learning difficulty. And it's only in the last few years that they've actually been able to diagnose these learning disabilities that before were looked at as misbehavior, as just outright rebelliousness. But no one knew what it was. And these kids, because they seemed unable or reluctant to learn, they'd end up getting the shit beaten outta them. The song ends, you know, with this idea of the shades going down?so that the neighbors can't see what happens next. What hurts about shit like that is that it ends up defining peoples' lives. They have to live with that abuse for the rest of their lives. Good, creative people are just fucking destroyed.

Lovely post Inchy and great to see you. I'm sorry about your brother. It must have been very hard on your parents.
:goodjob: on setting up the appointment with the counsellor. Best of luck with that. Please let us know how it goes.

Mrs. A - hope you're feeling better and not so sore. My, that was quite the tumble you took. I'm really amazed that you could go on running at all, never mind run more than you'd already run when you tripped. Hope you're taking good care of yourself and getting some rest.:l

Oney - great job on doing the airport run. You ROCK!!!

Now Molly, I really can't say much more than what has already been said about accepting yourself for the person that you are. I'm not one who pays much attention to what a person looks like - it's what a person is like that matters to me. But I have to say this - from the first time I saw a picture of you on FB from one of the Dublin meet-ups, I said to myself - Molly looks so cool. Love the way she's dressed and she looks like someone really fun to be with. I've not met you in person and we've only exchanged a few PM's here but I want to say that from your posts, you sound like a person that I would absolutely love to hang out with. Your spirit, your sense of humour, and the way you word things are what makes your posts stand out. We can all tell from your posts what a great Mum you are and how much you love your kids and your husband. You're a hard-working, intelligent woman who's had her share of obstacles thrown at her and yet you're still on your feet and fighting. I admire you immensely. And as Reccie and others said, you were missed when you were in rehab. The Army was counting the days til you finished rehab and would be back here and posting again. Our Molly is very dear to us. :l

:hallo: to all of you whether or not I've mentioned your name or replied to your posts.

:wavin: Panno - good idea!! How about two or three more...

Molly, no need to be embarrassed and no one is "being kind". We're just saying it like it is. Yer more than luverable. You're an asset to any group of people and if anyone doesn't want to be in your company, I'd say it was because they've got their own problems. So feck them.

Oney - I am still amazed that you did he airport run. I've been driving for ever and ever and still hate going to the airport. Get all the arrows and signs and such mixed up.

My Mom just called me to say she wants us to "Skype" so I'm off to talk to my amazing Mom. 82 years young and still going strong. Thank goodness.
