How do you feel about this quote?

I ran across a quote this morning that rings pretty true with me, but I am not sure whether I would have felt the same way 2 years ago.

It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.--Dr. James Gordon

Super, that's exactly what people have to have as a mindset when they want to stop drinking. It's not a matter of weakness, a fault, per se, it's what our mind wants, and until it wants sobriety, nothing anyone says or does will help. Thanks for the post.

I agree...I think we can do whatever we want to do...the key word being WANT. For a long time I didn't want to quit drinking, it had nothing to do with willpower. Now I want it more than anything, so I do it.

I like the quote because it points out that it's about a lot more than just not picking up that glass. It's a fundamental change that requires many other changes in one's life and thoughts.

This is exactly how I feel at this moment. I'm ready for change. I've had the strength to say no, but not sure if it was what I wanted. NOW I know it's what I want. For good. Great quote!

Excellent quote. You either WANT to be sober or you don't. Simple.

I do believe that "being ready for change" and then comitting to change are the First Steps to change.
Next comes, comittment, making a plan and then , sticking to that plan no matter what!

Supercrew - this was my 2nd post when i started the "QUOTES FOR TODAY" thread back on Dec 19th 2009.
I believed it then and I wasnt even sober in these day but I was
                        ready to change!

The difference for me was I finally committed. Although I said I committed before, the reality was I never really did. I wasn't ready to quit, and that's why I kept drinking. I would say I was ready, and there were parts of me that were ready, and my wife was ready, but I still thought I needed to drink somewhere in my subconscious. I was at that point on and off for about 5 years. Then I had enough and something clicked and I made a plan.

Windy - The way I see it is that people often use having no will power as an excuse to fail at something. I dont have any more or less will power than the next person. when I have failed at things in the past is been down to my lack of commitment to wanting whatever it is. I havent "wanted" it badly enough. When we truly want something with all our hearts and soul we usually succeed.
