Thanks Techie. I'm just about to look up Canon Aust phone number. Maybe between us I can get it dismantled and cleaned at a bit less than AUD $1,000 which I think is outrageous. A new one is about AUD $2100 but I got the Sigma for AUD $900.

Just spoke to a chap at Canon. He said about $450 but if bits need replacing then the cost could skyrocket (oh joy). He said if I bring it to them (a 4 hour return trip) they will have a much better idea.

Hi Techie,
Just phoned Mr Rags. He said go up to Canon with lens. I said do I want to return Sigma lens he said no. So I'm off now till this evening (my time). So looks like I may have a spare lens if the repair cost is reasonable. Also I want to get a 2 X converter to boost it up to 800 mm for Africa later this year.
That'll be a good test for steady hands and pulse rate!
