    1st day

Today is my first day, and already I am a little anxious. I have been averaging a 12-pack of beer a day for about a year. I don't see how I can just completely quit when it has become such a part of my after work routine. I plan to go running, as I do every day M-F, but that only gets me to about 5 pm. Suggestions?

    1st day

    Welcome Mary,

I used to do the beer thing years ago. I totally quite drinking from 1988 - 1993. Cold turkey, no meds. I used to drink about 8 or so beers a night.

When I quite, I substituted small glass bottles of club soda. Wanted carbination and was used to having something in my hand. It worked for me. Plus no calories or carbs. Then gradually weaned away to plain bottled water.

Don't be surprised if you notice some dietary cravings, like yogurt - for the cultures. I did.

I stayed really busy, worked full time, had three kids under 6, did every project I had put off for all the years that I was drinking. Staying busy was king for me. After getting the kids to bed, I would stay up quite late working on my projects. I used an over the counter sleep aid to help with the sleep problems for a little while and then gradually weaned away from that as well. Lots of new things now, more natural that are available.

Don't be afraid to talk to your Dr. about it.

Good luck, and once again, :welcome:

      Time

Hi Mary, yes I find the 'time' thing quite difficult, my routine was get home from work, do whatever needed doing as quickly as possible then settle down with bottle for the night. I now sit on the net along with doing a home study course which keeps my mind occupied. Don't think there is a one off remedy unfortunately ut I do now go visiting friends/family, join things and all I can say is GOOD LUCK with it and keep visiting this site.
Rather die standing, than live on my knees, begging Please..... No More.......

You have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired of it. I just take it one day at a time now and post everyday if I can, read all the posts I can and I always feel that there is someone here for me. I do not feel alone anymore with my drinking problem and it has helped me drastically.

        You can do it,
        Sammys

            1st day

            Hi Mary,
Welcome. I guess what worked for me was not what I drank because I was not loyal to a certain type. It was just cutting back. Drink a glass of water in between each beer. Do a project while you are drinking. Something that will keep you busy so you aren't just thinking about drinking. Give yourself a time that you will go to bed no matter what that way you don't lose track of time so badly and stay up too late.
            Hope some of that helps.
            I wish you the best.
