MrsA --- you have rebelled - and rightly so. I want to say to you 'sod them all' - but that's easier said than done. Your last two sentences sum up what happened - and WILL continue happening until you take control. Just a question - and I've been wanting to ask Satz as well - why is MWO a secret from spouses and family? Family I can understand - but a spouse who has been told about the problem??? I just wonder is that part of trying to keep everyone happy?
Anyway - to the immediate problem. I think from having met you, you are a bit like me -- find it tricky to 'make a stand'? I think the time has come. If they're all thick with you anyway - what better time to gather the troops and say it as it is.
Feck I'm gonna break my rule I just made in answering Oney's post --- my family and especially Joe make such an important contribution to my sobriety - it comes first for all of them --- LITERALLY - I've become a bit of a prima-donna tbh - have to be careful not to play on it - every single event is referred to me - 'does that suit you Mum - any problems with that?' A 'no' from me - it happens, a 'yes' from me - it doesn't. Get them onboard if you can - just tell them the truth - you haven't murdered anyone, you haven't mugged an old lady - you have a disease - and it's called alcoholism - and you are fighting tooth and nail to battle it, and you need their help?
I'm sad you drank the other night - but in a way that MUST prove to you how important this is - all said with love:l
So for me to go to Mr Satz and says I have a problem would be mortifing & I suppose admitting something I don't want to. I prefer to deal with stuff myself in my own way if I can.
Mr Satz couldn't cope - prefers to think everything is grand & don't tell him otherwise and upset his little bubble.
Molls I envy you that support you have, I really do, but the thought of them all knowing Mam is an alko - unless I had to - Jesus no way . I'd die first.
Ye know Molls - I'd imagine this 'weakness' of yours has brought you both closer - you are not infallable. I always put on the stong one face & never show weakness. Bad I know .:upset:

mollyka;1342905 wrote: Ah Mama - we all have our own way of expressing things - doesn't make one way right or another wrong. I think as a nation the Irish are very 'to the point' and there's quite a big Irish contingent here --- well there was - sometimes too blunt I s'pose but sure - sod them:H
Yeah - I get what you're saying - and actually - up till last October the rest of my family were 'relatively' unaware of a major drinking problem. Joe and I always drank together - and tbh we both drank too much. He's the son of an alcoholic - so his worries re. our drinking prolly even pre-dated real worries if you know what I mean! So it was very easy for him and me to sing off the same hymn-sheet when it really became an issue. MOST of the time - almost all I was that horrible expression a 'functional alkie' -- always did what needed doing - stayed 'relatively' sober at family 'does' - in the end it was trying to stop drinking that caught up with me as regards the kids. I would go a few months with no booze, and then like 2 glasses of wine would knock me down - so that's really when I appeared to be drinking like a mad-woman - but in fact it was dribbles in comparison to what had been going on a few years ago - my tolerance then was unbelieveable really - scares me now to think of it - and that went on for about 2 years on and off.
Anyway in my long-winded way I'm trying to say 'I understand' - and yes I'm soooo lucky to have them in my court - it would be very difficult without them
I'd say we've not had a proper discussion about feelings in years. If ever now I think about it.
Up to recently I'd be there having my few drinks getting the dinner ready - he's be there watching the soaps for God's sake. More than once I said why you watching that when REAL life is happening here around you.
I'm thinking now something catastrophic would have to happen to get his attenion )
Think I need a shrink .....................

here is my supporting statement that will be put up on the voting site next to my name:
Hiya, my name is ...............I am enrolled on the Bsc honours in psychology and counselling degree. I feel like I would make a good representative for the BPS as I already have experience representing individuals. I am currently the course rep for part time students on psychology degrees and I have been in this role for two years. I also work as a support worker for individuals with autisim, fragile X , epilepsy and challenging behaviour. So as you can see I have experience in coping with challenging situations and representing people.
I am also a trainee person centred counsellour and currently work with significant issues in mental health and psychology, currently my clients issues are: sexual abuse, young persons onset dementia, anxiety, low mood and relationship and intimacy issues. I am an empathic and congruent indivdidual who always trys to makes time to listen to people's concerns and issues and give them the time and respect they deserve.
If voted as the BPS representative I will endeavour to fuflfill this role to the best of my ability and I will always try my best to be available to be there for students with their issues and concerns.I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it's the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It's probably the most important thing in a person.
