What does it mean when someone's name is listed as being online, with an + next to it?

Not sure either - this is actually my first post ever (but I've been reading through them day after day, VERY good stuff This seemed like an easy post to jump into...no real commitment you see haha

My guess to the + is that it is for the people on your buddie list who are actually online right now.

Yeah it has to do with your buddy list. I added a whack of people to my buddy list and ever since I did, they have a + sign by their name when they are logged in (you can see at the bottom of the main page who is logged in or not). For those of us who are 'private' persons, LOL, and have our CP user ID on as 'hidden', you won't see our names or a + sign at the bottom of the page. But we may be logged in........... whoha ha ha......
There may be where lies the confusion. If you have someone on your buddy list and they are 'hidden' you won't see it.
