finally getting over the bug I had, busy today making curtains for a freind...

Hope you are all having a good day...
can you make some for me too Lily??!!

Seriously, given how talented you are in the craft department, I'd really appreciate your advice. One of the things I want to do to get the house ready for sale is to make some new curtains. I prefer to not have them at all, as I like waking up with the light and in sync with the seasons. But we have some cheap ready-made sheers in our bedroom (mainly for privacy reasons), no curtains in one bedroom, and the curtains that were there when I bought the house in the office - which are now looking very faded and old. So I was thinking that I'd try and replace them all with something that is the same through all three bedrooms so that it all looks nicer, but I'm trying to keep the costs down as much as possible. (and for that reason I might just go for ready mades)

Anyway, I've been out and got a couple of swatches and I want to make a decision this weekend about what I decide to do. My questions are:
*how easy is voille to sew on a fairly basic sewing machine?? (operated by a fairly mediocre and out-of-practice sew-er!)
*there are normal curtain rails in two rooms, but a rod in the other, and we don't really want to mess around with changing those. But I can't quite get my head around how I would make curtains that would work with both. Any suggestions??

hope you don't mind me asking for your help!!

Missy, you can buy rings to go on the curtain rod, they have little holes at the bottom, where you hook the the cutrains onto, that will make them all look the same..

voille is easy enough to sew, I measure and press all the hems first, that makes it a lot easier..for sewing.. also you probably already know this, but make sure you put a new needle in sewing machine before you start, I use a size 14 sharp... if I lived closer to you I would of quite happily made them for you...

Job's done! Lilly - it was smoking inside the house at the joint between sections 2 & 3 so there had to be a blockage. After some stunt maintenance involving a tall step ladder, leather gloves and a very long poking stick I've cleared the bugger of great chunks of accumulated sooty crud. Why this build-up has suddenly occurred is beyond me. But it's all working again.

And as to Happs (( I don't think we should mention the f word - she's a bit sensitive))

Lily - thank you so much!! I will go to Spotlight tomorrow and make sure I leave plenty of time - my biggest problem is that I get impatient and always try to do things too quickly (and then get cross at myself because I haven't done it properly ). Like measuring and pressing the hems first And note to self - buy some new machine needles! (Of course, whether my eye sight is good enough to be able to thread said needle is another question :H:H)

anyway, I'll keep you posted and may come back for some more advice!

A nice bit of karma happened late this afternoon. As lots of you know, our business has been struggling for a couple of months as the effect of public sector cutbacks trickle through the Wellington economy. We've been putting the word out amongst our networks, without wanting to appear desperate. Late this afternoon I had a ring from an ex-student, a really lovely woman to whom I had given quite a lot of help about fifteen years ago but who I haven't seen since (check out the grammar TF :H:H). She had heard that we were on the hunt for work and wanted to know if she could put my name forward for some short term contract work in the organization that she is working for. It was a lovely thing to happen at the end of what has felt like a hard week

Yes Happy - I want to know whether they paid for their overnight board and accommodation by giving you eggs too :H

Lily - I have absolutely no idea of what tape I am using but if you have any recommendations I would be very grateful!! My intent is to go for sheers, so I thinking something quite light (2-3 cm nylon jobbies with 2 draw strings) rather than those heavy duty ones with 4-5cm almost-canvas-like tape. But tell me if I should be thinking differently!!
