    Open Letter to Roberta Jewell

    Hi, Roberta,

I don't know when you'll read this, but hope that someday soon you will stumble across this thread. My name is Dave, and I'm on day 10. A couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't believe I could go 10 days without alcohol. I was drinking on average about 8 beers a day and probably at least a 1/2 pint of tequila 3-4x a week. Throw in a couple of glasses of wine 3x a week, and the few nights a month that I "really drank" and you'll get the not so pretty picture.

I'm a 50 y.o. man who's wife is going to give birth to twins soon. If all goes as scheduled, which rarely happens, it will be via c-section on August 9. I'm on this journey because, as I tell myself in hypnosis, I love my wife and children more than I love alcohol.

I've stirred up a little bit of a brew-ha ha (pardon the pun, I do crack myself up!) in the Newbie's Nest, and as a result searched for your posts. I'm interested to hear that you gave up moderation for abstinence, as my goal was to take control of my drinking. Despite some of the arguments I've had with posters about one versus the other, I'm very seriously considering the fact that abstinence may be easier than moderation, and am pretty sure I'll go beyond my goal of 30 days.

I went back to the doctor that is treating me during this journey last night. He initially scoffed at MWO (and a similar organization called "The Last Call") and told me I should go to AA. There's many reasons I don't want to take that route, but I did trust that the support is critical. Fortunately I'm finding it here in the forums, and through my own email blog to a few very select friends and family members. He refused to put me on Topamax, but I do find the Naltrexone to be very effective. Not too happy about certain side affects, but that's another story!

The doctor, a highly regarded addiction specialist really didn't have much to say last night. He told me I looked a whole lot better than a couple of weeks ago, and was pleased to hear I was 9 days sober! He started talking about the social impact alcohol has and how it burdens the healthcare system. Half way through my appointment I told him that the discussion was interesting, but how does it relate to my treatment. His response: "by understanding the impacts of alcohol you will be more motivated to stay on your program and sober." He too espouses abstinence over moderation, but offered zero counseling. I'll see him at least once more and stay on Naltrexone for another month (through August) but I really need someone that is therapeutic more than pharmatherapy!

The whole point to this is that I've gotten more from your program (I ordered the 6 week extreme rescue pack and additional hypnotherapy CD's) than from a well trained and regarded addiction doctor. I cannot thank you enough, and want you to know that you probably saved my life, and have me headed towards a much happier second 50 years! My wife, and our soon to be born babies thank you as well.

Good luck wherever life may take you, and God bless.

    :greatjob2:
