techie;1366736 wrote: I had a very scary moment early this morning. I was hiking a new trail with two others. We were on a ridge line looking east at a huge plume of smoke from a forest fire about 20km away. The smoke was getting very close. As we began our decent the wind shifted and brought the smoke our way. In less than 15 minutes we were enveloped in dense smoke. It was so bad and so thick you could not see the trail. Our biggest fear was loosing our footing. Looking straight up, you could see nothing but blue sky. We decided to climb back up to the summit very slowly. I attempted to use my cell phone to call the Forest Service but I was out of range. We did find an alternate trail down using my gps, but it took three hours. Everyone was out of water w/ 5k to go, so we all kissed the ground when we hit the trailhead.

Lesson learned: Know the area and ALL alternate routes. Bring more water than you think you'll need. ONLY hike/climb in areas where someone has a cell tower signal. Techie WILL take the Arizona Wilderness Survival course when offered again in October!

Ummmmm take a map with you? You know, one of those old tech papery things with lines and squiggles and keys to what all the funny drawings mean.
I have booked you in with Sarge, Corporal Rags and Bear Grylls to do a wilderness survival course.

And you check with the Fire Service before going on yer hike.
And have a box of matches so you can start a back burn. But please, only do that if you know what you're doing.
Have 2 water bottles... in case you lose one (dunno how that could happen) or one gets holed or leaks etc.

There's a great publication put out by Canadian Wildlife Service on Wilderness rescue...... Oops. you need to be a rescuer to read that. Not a rescueee... :H

Hmmm is there just a bit too much dependence on mobile phones? Do NOT rely on your mobile phone, for precisely what happened to you, plus cell towers get taken out in bushfires.

Thanks Rags. Yup, it was scary stuff. I do have a map of the area, but the topography changes often in that area due to fires, down fall, trail erosion, etc. Sometimes, more often than not, there are no trails but those made by traversing dangerous areas full of debris to get back on a mapped trail. The GPS allows for that. It snapshots the forest service's latest info. The cell phone IS a useful tool here. Because we are in a valley. most providers put their signal towers at the highest point. I have pictures of me at many of them :H I do hike in other areas of the state that you cannot get a cell phone signal. I usually prepare for that. :l

Fires generally move up and along ridgelines., so that was why I was saying don't rely on your phone. We had a fire close to here a couple of weeks ago on wet heathland which took out some leccy. Only took out 1300 hectares, but damaging enough.
