How much money did you spend on alcohol?
The national statistics would have you believe that an average household in the UK spends around ?11.50 on alcoholic beverages a week. The estimates for the US are ven lower at 500 USD a year or around ?6 per week. I choose to humbly reject this figure and calculate a more accurate figure.
I believe that in order to accurately project an annual expenditure on alcohol, one needs to include all alcohol related activities. So here goes:
I will use 48 weeks a year instead of 52, as I have on average a month off a year. ?4.25 as a price of a pint of beer and ?4.50 price of pint in town centre.
I smoker around two packs a week. I only smoke when I drink. 2 (packs) x ?7 (price) x 48 (weeks in a year) = ?672 per year
Taxis home. Friday nights at 3rd tariff. ?22.50 x 48 = ?1080 (If I went out sober, I would have caught the last train home)
Takeaways. McDonalds or a kebab on the way home. ?5 x 48 = ?240
Thursday nights at a bar with work colleagues or friends (Thirsty Thursday). ?4.25 a pint x 3.5 X 48 = ?714
Friday nights. Usually 1 or 2 pints after work before heading out with friends. 1.5 x ?4.25 x 48 = 306
Drink at a bar on Friday and Saturday nights 6 dinks a night x 2 x ?4.5 x 48 = ?2592
Drinking at home Mon –Thursdasy and Sundays probably around ?15. Not everyday but on average a week ?15 x 52 = ?780
Drinking every day, twice a year on holidays 2 x 7 x ?20 = ?280
Christmas and bank holidays 2 x 7 x ?20 = ?280
Monthly Casino walk in, due to the late opening hours of the venue ?100 x 12 = ?1200
Every other month strip club visits with colleagues and friends. Never been there sober and doubt I ever will. ?100 x 6 = ?600
Dry cleaning suits and ties due to tobacco smell and alcohol stains. ?10 x 48 = ?480
So the grand total is ?8918 a year or ?171.50 a week.
Granted I live in London and usually choose bars over drinking at home as I don’t have a family but if anything this is a low estimate, as I didn’t include: buying drinks for girls or other strangers, nights out at clubs (most of them have entrance fees and the drinks there are a lot more expensive than at a bar), clothes ruined due to drinking and smoking, other stuff that I forgot to mention. My friends must spend a similar amount. So how can an entire household spend ?11.50 a week is beyond me.
So please join me and calculate the cost of your deadly habbits. Now friends let’s put this money to good use and just imagine what we can do with all the dosh we will save in 10 – 20 years
