UNDEROOS - Rocktober - Yeah baby!

From Narok we headed sort of southish then turned off the main road onto a dirt track. (The main road was dirt as well) . Following the track for a few Km it then starts to divide… a person could get a bit lost here. Well, if you kept the ridgeline behind you and slightly to your left, you’d eventually get back to the main road ……or eaten by a lion.

We stopped at this crossroad to top up our water supply from a bore and a couple of kids who were minding the cattle came up to see what was going on…
As I am unfortunately a water snob, we brought along the katydyn again… and it would get clogged about every 4th day. So the water is pretty rough in places. They put chlorine in it which is OK for cooking but tea and coffee tastes terrible. So we’d get our own water (pre chlorinated) and fill our bottles.

About another half hour or so and we reached Chris’ village where we were to camp for the night. Very nice, basic setup.
Just over the rise is the Masai village… we go there tomorrow.

From our tents you cross a small rivulet to the cooking/dining area. That is the road in/out. Note the bowls ready set up.. One bowl for washing, one bowl is disinfectant, the next is rinsing. Same goes for us… before we start to prepare food or sit down to eat, we wash, disinfect and rinse. We had bought a couple of beers (yes I know… but see above note on water quality) and I put them in the little rivulet to cool down. Frank and Marilyn thought it a nifty idea. The beer is marginally better than the water….. Africa is a great place to stop drinking. We used wipes to clean round the neck of the bottle before opening them.

This is one of the men who was volunteered to stay up all night and help guard the camp. And they did. When I went out for my 4 am pee behind the tent, I heard him approaching, as he’d obviously heard a noise.. (me).

    Note the mobile phone.

How much do we take something simple like fresh water for granted?

Human dignity, kids growing up being the best they can be, big animals grazing ......... your photos capture that and I loved looking at them.

I loved the "beware of hippos" photo ....... I spent an enchanting 20 minutes watching a baby hippo in Nepal. It is etched in my memory

We are sorting out "stuff" ..... have been listening to The Carpenters all arvo :H:H And enjoying it :H
          Hello Missy,
Well, sounds like you went very well with the interview.
Take no notice of Tawny's sorting comment. She ought to see my place! And we got rid of heaps before we moved, what almost three years now.

Yes, we westerners are very priveledged in so many ways, but we also pay the price... mental illness, heart disease, diabetes etc etc all the stress related diseases of our lifestyle. What is disheartening is that so many kids have great ambitions, but little chance of achieving them as there are just too many people, not enough opportunity. Having said that, there are also many organisations helping to educate kids, particularly orphans who have lost their parents , mostly AIDS. What I saw over and over and over was people who have bugger all by our standards, happy and smiling and seemingly content.

When we were in Africa last time, we were on a different route. We saw Masai at a distance only. The bus did stop at a village where for ten bucks each you could go inside and walk around for 40 minutes. We didn’t take up the offer and I’d been regretting it a little as I had wanted to get some photos of Masai.
Now, here I was at Chris’ village… it was a dream come true. Be prepared for a few photos…..

Don't you just throb throb throb Little Leon's swimming pic?

My niece started swimming lessons at around that age and became a really competent swimmer. A few years ago, when she was 12, she competed in the School Sports and won a gold medal in freestyle, then a silver in backstroke and finally a bronze in butterfly. This puzzled me because butterfly was always her strongest stroke and when I asked her what the story was she simply replied ... "I could have won them all but I really wanted the set".

                    Hello Reggie,
                    More piccies on the way.
We looked at a Castle 22 just before we went on hols. Nice boat, in beaut condition but they want $27,ooo for it. Then we'd have to sell our lovely (but very heavy) Cole 19. Wonder if there's any way we can lighten it ? What would happen if we tried to replace the keel? It weighs about 500 kilos. Any ideas? Remember too Reg, Mr Rags is not very adept at some DIY stuff.

I am going to watch the Marigold hotel as well. Supposedly very feel good.

MB, I think of you every time we take Leon to his swim lessons.
Love and HUgs to you all!:l
There's a bit more vacation coming right your way Sunny.

Isn't Leon THE best looking kid? (Though Aspey might have something to say about that).

                      You'll enjoy Marigold Hotel.
Maybe all we Undies could retire to somewhere similar.
Ye gods! What am I saying! I don't think I could ever live in India after my very short visit there upon which I made many judgements. I have an acquaintance who has been living there for about 5 years now, after she was made redundant by SBS and didn't have enough super to live in OZ. She is very easy going though.

Yeah, we love it. It's just that it weighs 1700 kilos and the mast is a bugger to put up.
Gee, we still have to arrange either for you to come up or us to go down and have a sail sometime.

While we set up our tents, Chris’s brother came over to say hello.

Others came across to meet and greet, including the amazing masturbating doggy. I didn’t take a picture of him doing it . Frank told me the dog had done it again about an hour later. Nup, he doesn’t use a convenient human leg. Does it all by himself, to himself. The animal kingdom never cease to amaze.

After we set up camp, Chris, who is now and elder and no longer a warrior and is also one of the sons of the chief, took us to the village to meet and greet and join in a bit of dancing.

I love this shot... while the other ladies were checking out their photo, the third lady looked to me and gave me such a beautiful smile.

And this lady is studying accountancy and is working for a finance firm, I assume in Narok.
