I was a conductor for 18 months in my early 20's. Spread shifts, but a fantastic job. I learned a lot about human behaviour. Bring 'em back now i say.

Grow a mo and support a bro'. If yer not raising a few bucks, no worries. It's a statement

      Don't get me started mate:H
And I probably should add that I don't 'identify' as unionist....but don't get me going on human rights or it's all over.
      Also animal rights.
      Especially children's rights.......
      Oh you get the picture....
If your 8 year old self met you, would they be proud?

Unionist or not. It's about unity and a united front to kick arse and get a fair and just outcome.

I've just learnt not to buy into anybody else's concept of how life should be, but rather to use my own judgement and instinct to intuit what is fair
                .

I think we all instinctively know what is fair and right. One rule for everyone etc....

It was all useful info and such a positive vibe in the union office. Everyone is so friendly, positive and supportive. The training is first rate and gives you lot's of confidence re negotiating with management. The back-up is extraordinary and enthusiastic. I'm quietly pumped and confident in my ability to support my co-workers if they need it.

I have great hopes for 'new' or 'progressive' unionism myself. I've long thought that unions needed a bit of a grease and oil change. Bearing in mind with great respect to the Tolpuddle Martyrs and countless other inspiring forefathers/mothers....without losing the founding mission of course.

The thing i love about being a delegate, is that if/when a dispute is happening, and it's obviously unfair, i will cherish the opportunity to go in to bat for a co-worker if they want that, because fairness and justice speak all languages, except some employers. Today we were talking of techniques other than industrial action to get a fair outcome. Interesting stuff.

Yep, the Tolpuddle women left a legacy that we must never forget. There is still much to fight for, and much to maintain and not allow to be eroded.

Reg, check out some of the Tolpuddle ladies writings sometime.

It is bloody fascinating Mr G.
Sometimes.... simply the willingness to support someone is an enormous comfort.
To have industrial knowledge up the sleeve is a bonus

Tolpuddles weren't only women Mr G. Mostly men really. Agricultural labourers.
Are you thinking of the Suffragettes?

Sorry, no, i was thinking of the Victorian Tailoresses union formed 1880. They striked against wage cuts in 1882, the first womens strike. Led to a royal commission and the Workroom and shops act which set minimum work conditions.
